NC Museum of Art by TimDaoust The North Carolina Art Museum has quite an extensive collection and is a fun trip. Admission is free and the museum itself is huge and has European, Egyptian, African, South American and other Native American exhibits as well as modern art and some early American art. Quite often there are also special exhibits that you must pay to get into. Recently they had an exhibit of works by Matisse and Picasso. They have even had some of Rodin's work come to the museum. A nice gift shop, a very nice outdoor area with an ampitheater and a huge movie screen where they have outdoor movies during the summer time. Also there is a path that circles the grounds and connects to the Raleigh Greenway. Along the path one can find all sorts of art as well. Check it out if you're in the area. Leave a Comment Address: Blue Ridge Road.Phone: (919) 839-6262Directions: From the airport, take I-40 east. Merge onto Wade Ave. Take the Blue Ridge Road exit and turn left. The Museum will be on your right. Follow the signs.Website: http://ncartmuseum.org/

Exploris entrance by TimDaoust This is a pretty neat place, that I'm sad to say I haven't had a chance to explore much yet. The museum itself calls itself the "first interactive museum about the world". A few weeks ago they hosted a Tsunami benefit and had presentations about the cultures of people in the affected areas. Wish I could have gone. They have an IMAX theater inside plus many exhibits about world cultures. They also host afterschool and summer camps for kids. Definitely worth checking out. I think they had Harry Potter 3 at the IMAX theater here for a while. Leave a Comment

Pullen Park is a fun place to take the kids and for grown ups as well. The main fun here for me when I was a kid was the electric train the goes around the park. Every kid on the train screams in the tunnel on the first part of the ride. Not out of fright but to annoy the parent or babysitter riding with them. There is also a pond with pedal boats, an old fashioned carousel that dates back to 1976. The rides are inexpensive and are paid for with tickets that you can buy at the entrance to the park. If rides aren't your thing there is plenty else to do in the park. One can just simply stroll around and appreciate the gardens, have a picnic at any of the many sheltered picnic areas or even take a dip in the swimming pool. The NC Symphony is one of those cultural aspects of Raleigh that you sort of grow up with if you grow up in the area. We took field trips to see concerts in Elementary school and my parents have dragged us to several concerts and themselves bought season tickets the past few years. The NC Symphony performs about 60 concerts a year around the Triangle area, the bulk of which are performed in the Meymandi concert hall in the BTI center for the performing arts in downtown Raleigh. There are some performed at the AJ Fletcher theater, the Carolina theater in Durham and Meredith College to name a few. Definitely worth a visit as the concert hall is spectacular and the symphony itself is a joy to hear. I will actually have the chance to sing with the symphony in April as part of a 170 member choral ensemble. Should be cool. If you're here in the month of October and want to enjoy a piece of the tobacco state's culture try out the fair. Enjoy the rides but beware of spending too much money on food and trinkets. There can be all sorts of interesting things to see and taste here at the fair and there are often fireworks at night. Parking and traffic in the area can be a mess but if you're looking for a night of fun with the locals it should be worth it. I haven't been in years but I have a few fond memories. Mostly of rides and food but there's obviously more to it. The actual dates vary year to year but it's usually the second or third week of October. Next year is the 14-23 of October. Leave a Comment Address: NC State Fairgrounds Hillsborough st.Directions: From I-40 take the Hillsborough st. exit and go west toward Cary, there is parking all around the state fairgrounds and you will normally be directed where to park.Website: www.ncstatefair.org

Moore's Square by TimDaoust This park is located on a block in downtown Raleigh across from the historic City Market district. There are walkways and benches and great oak trees. A great place to stretch out after a meal at any of the surrounding restaurants. A little warning though, the bums find it cozy too and will most likely be there to distrub you and beg for change. Most of them are pretty nice though and shouldn't try to harm you. The park is the year round home of the giant acorn that is the focal point of our "First Night" celebration. Read more about the acorn at my First Night tip. Leave a Comment Address: between Blount, Person, Hargett and Martin streets

I haven't been in here in a while but it's a main historic site in downtown Raleigh. It was completed in 1840 and sits on Edenton St. on a block all to itself. For tour information and history, go here. Leave a Comment Address: 5 E. Edenton Street

The complex is comprised of four venues, Memorial auditorium, Meymandi Concert Hall, Kennedy Theater and AJ Fletcher auditorium. All manner of events are held here from concerts to theater; The Broadway series south has all of its shows that come to the area here, and the NC Symphony plays regularly in Meymandi concert hall. Outside is the Lichtin plaza comprised of a nice fountain and courtyard area and the lobby inside is beautifully adorned with huge chandeliers and artwork. If you are in the area and want to see a show, this is the place to go. Leave a Comment Address: Corner of South St., Wilmington and SalisburyDirections: From I-40 take the S.
