Surf Unlimited: Great selection

by ben223

Surf Unlimited is located on the causeway and it has everthing that a beach surfshop / boutique should have. The best selection of surf boards south of Wilmington, great guys clothing, even better girls fashions for my wife and daughter, but best of all the shades and flops that this place had was unreal (never have I seen such a selection in such a small shop). We were also able to rent our kayak and two bikes from the guys downstairs (best bikes on the beach at the best price). Ask the blonde guy for surfing pointers if you need help or they get them to set you up with some lessons. Lots of help and great island feel, must check it out. upscale beach wear, tons of shades and flops, and grab some bikes here we got some beach diggs (swim wear, shades (coasta del mars), a few tees, some rainbow and reef flops, and rented a couple of bikes and a kayak for the week for probably $450, made...

Outlets: Good stuff, lower price

by b1bob

Reading, Pennsylvania is widely known for its retail outlet stores, but North Carolina has its fair share with all its textile mills. When I was little, I remember going with my mama and grandma Atkins to Fieldcrest in Eden and to Rolane in Greensboro for a long day of shopping the day after Thanksgiving in 1980. More frequently than those, we would often go to the Burlington Outlets (not afiliated with Burlington Coat Factory) for back-to-school clothes shopping. It is in the form of a strip mall with some 40 odd stores offering virtually everything at a discount. Outlets don't necessarily have to be at the mill site. For example, outlet malls pop up at resort areas like Nags Head in the Outer Banks with the Tanger Outlets. Outlet stores mainly offer clothing and accessories, but there are some food and tool places at some of these outlet malls. Less than normal.

Mast General Store ( candy shop): Valle Crucis -my favorite candy store

by Florida999

This little town is located between Banner Elk and Boone , beware of very narrow mountain road if you are coming from Banner Elk. Why go there? It has the best candy store:) They sell just about every type of candy you can imagine and you pay for it by the pound. You get a basket up front and just load up loose candy ( some other stuff too) in the basket, they put in on the scale at the register and you get a bag full of goodies. I think we spent like $30 last time we went....My favorite candy: dark chocolate covered coffee beans

Brew Thru: Beer To Go

by phastphreddy

Now this is an NC classic. I don't know if they exist outside of the outer banks, but these joints are the work of a true genius. They're basically a barn, open at each end (so you can drive through, of course). Inside the barn, fridges and what not line the sides. You drive in, tell them what you want, they load your car up, and you drive out . Beer on the go. It makes you proud to be an American. Beer!!But if you're from out of town, you might like a souviner t-shirt or something, just to prove that you've been there. regular price

Southpoint Mall: Shopping Mall

by Astrobuck

This is the second largest mall in the state. It is over 6 Million square feet and has practically every brand name shop located in it. There is a 2-story Barnes and Noble (HUGE), an Organized Living store, a large movie theatre, and many others. This is a place you should go if you are passing through.

Belk: b1bob's North Carolina shopping tip no. 5

by b1bob

Technically speaking, Belk department stores are located all over the South, from Virginia through to Texas. However, VT does not yet have "The South" as a destination and Belk is based in North Carolina. It is mainly a fashion-oriented department store. For example, you won't find a lawn and garden department here like you would at Sears or J.C. Penney's. Mainly clothes are available for sale here. You can also find china and glassware as well. Belk has an automated bridal registry which makes it easy for folks to find wedding presents here. The only time I ever go there is to get Grandma a gift certificate at her birthday or at Christmas. It was much more convenient when they had a Belk at Virginia Centre Commons in Glen Allen. If my grandma can shop here (at the South Boston, VA location), it has to be at least a little reasonable.

Shopping tidbits

by acemj

Raleigh and Charlotte both have top-notch malls for everything from high fashion to housewares. Charlotte also has many antique stores. Native American crafts can be purchased in Cherokee and Appalachian crafts are abundant along the Blue Ridge Parkway. But the best deals in the state can be found in Hickory and High Point where you'll find yourself in furniture heaven.
