The French & Indian (or Seven Years) War (which actually lasted nine years) is not one of the most ardently studied American wars but it is definitely worth some interest. This war was waged between 1754 and 1763 and did set some of the alliances and conflicts which came to full flower during our Revolutionary War 15-25 years later. This conflict was waged primarily in the area which now makes up the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada but there was at least one battle which was fought in the central part of North Carolina, at Fort Dobbs, just west of Statesville. Named for the British Colonial governor of North Carolina at the time, Fort Dobbs was built to protect European settlers on the Western "frontier." On 26 and 27 February 1760, a small garrison of settlers successfully defended the fort (which is now in the early stages of restoration) from a band of Cherokee Indians. The fort is now the scene of a recurring series of re-enactments and other historical commemorations, but the weekend of my first visit was the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Dobbs and was a very special occasion.

In year 2006, the annual hot air balloon festival/competition will be held during the weekend of Oct.27-28. This will be a great family fun event. A while ago, $5 can take you up to 100 feet with a hot air ballon, or $100+, an hour long ride.

Good, quick and cheap. How seldom can put all three adjectives together in a single sentence? Not often. Nice waitstaff too!

Favorite Dish: BBQ sandwich (chopped on a bun w/ cole slaw, fries and 2 hush puppies) was the best!
