Nearby Beaufort, NC:
For the price of a roundtrip ferry ride to Shackleford Banks (we paid $15/person), you may enjoy the experience of walking alongside 120 wild horses. The horses originally arrived on the island hundreds of years ago with the Spanish. Today the island remains primitive and the habitat of the horses preserved.
Plan to spend at least a few hours here (on foot). You can bring a picnic lunch if you choose, and schedule your return trip with the ferry before you depart. If you get there early enough (1st ferries leaving a about 9AM) you may find some of the best shell-hunting grounds on the NC coast. Almost the entire length of the 8-mile-long X 2-mile-wide island's East shore is covered in shells - and sea life! We bumped into a couple crabs and an expired turtle :(
Oh yeah - don't forget the sunscreen! It's pretty easy - even for those with a good base tan - to get scorched out there.
Me and my hubby ate there when we went on vacation at Topsail Island. The waitress was really nice and the service was awesome. the food was out of this world good. Will go there the next time we are in that area.
