I remember when I was little going to Charlotte was awesome. It was our "big city." The three hour drive took forever for a child, but the treat was seeing the big "skyscraper" with the crown in downtown Charlotte from far away. :-)
Charlotte is a clean, fun, new city. Carowinds, Discovery Place, Lake Norman, and the nearby speedway are all things to see.
If you're interested in modern architecture, then Charlotte is the best that the state has to offer. It is the second leader banking city in the United States behind New York and almost all of the buildings are owned by banks. Uptown is also becoming a more accommodating area for residents with many upscale condos and apartments being built and new restaurants opening at a record pace.
Charlotte is the banking capital of the South. While it doesn't have deep historical roots, there will be plenty to see and do there. If you are taking a culinary trip, for example, Charlotte is heaven on earth.
Uptown Charlotte has a few beautiful churches and many interesting skyscrapers and sometime seeing them together makes for an interesting photo.
