Be very careful in the beaches due to the increase in shark attacks as of late. Other than that, North Carolina is generally a monotnous state. Very similar to most states in the this regard.

The undertows in the ocean can be VERY strong. Since there are no lifeguards, you swim at your own risk.
Many of the beaches located along the National Seashore do not have lifeguards, beware of riptides that can pull you out into the ocean. If you get caught in one, you need to remember not to panic.
Beware of the rip tides if you swim in the ocean down there. The shoals make for bad rip tides. Oh yea, watch out for the sharks too!
