It's a place that sells local cheese and buttter. ALL kinds of both! Very fresh and good. They also sell kitcshy stuff: Dilly Beans (good), brandy canned peaches (not so much brandy!) and lots of crackers and jams, etc. Even local wines. There really isn't anything else to do in West Jefferson. Buy cheese! You will be glad you did!

This of course is simply enjoying the beauty of the mountains in the fall. "Leaf lookers" are in abundance in October, the first half of which is usually the best time for this area of North Carolina.

The Sourth fork of the New River provides some terrific relaxing canoing. If you are looking for real whiter water, this is the wrong place (that is on the New River as it passes through West Virginia). There are some mild rapids and in a few places you may have to portage (i.e. carry the canoe) due to the low one-way mountain bridges(look Ma! no sides!) . There are numerous Canoe Outfitters that will rent you a canoe and transport you upstream so you canoe "The New" back to the outfitters. One such place is Zaloo's Canoes. "The New in the Fall" picture was taken about 100 yards North beyond the highwayy 88 bridge over 'The New'.

This is a beatiful drive. Keep in mind that it can get crowded on weekends at peak times (especially in the fall) and that bad weather (in particular, ice and snow) can make for treacherous driving. This is a slow, scenic route meant for leisurely travel and frequent sight-seeing stops.

Favorite thing: At Ashe County Cheese, you can purchase fresh cheese curd. Mmmmmmmm! This is the only cheese factory in the state of North Carolina. They have an observation room where you can look through a large window onto the factory floor and watch the cheese being made.
