first presbyterian church

the first presbyterian church is one of several historic churches in downtown wilmington. the first presbyterian church was established in 1785. the first church was built in 1818, the second church in 1821 and the third church in 1861. the first three presbyterian churches were destroyed by fire. the current presbyterian church was built in 1928. dr. joseph ruggles wilson was the pastor of the first presbyterian church between 1874 and 1875. dr. wilson's son woodrow wilson was the 28 th president of the united states. for those interested in hstory and architecture the first presbyterian is worth a vist when in downtown wilmington.

I popped in hoping to get a glimpse inside the sanctuary and was not disappointed. One of the church members was kind enought to share her knowledge of the building with me and she even invited me to church on Sunday! President Woodrow Wilson was a member of the church which was established in 1760. The present Gothic structure was finished in the 1920s and is, in my opinion, the second most impressive Gothic cathedral in the state (Duke University's is #1 on my list).
