This beautiful plantation is currently not open to the public. Louis Moore Bacon, a descendant of the family that built the property, bought Orton Plantation late in 2010. It has been closed for renovations since June 2010.

    April Gardens at Orton Plantation

One of the main attractions in the Wilmington area is a visit to Orton Plantation. We visited in the spring when it is just breathtakingly beautiful there.
The house is a private residence but the grounds and gardens are open for tours.
The informal gardens are on 20 acres of the former rice plantation. It just drips "south" here with enormous live oaks and the overall landscaping.
A tour around the gardens takes about one hour.
The grounds at Orton are also a premier bird watching location.

Open March through August 8 to6
and September through December 10 to 5
Cost is $9 adult, $8 Seniors and $3 Children.

One of the most beautiful Southern manor houses, with some of the finest gardens, that I've ever seen. Built in 1725, it was later the home of North Carolina governor Benjamin Smith.

A historic southern plantation along the banks of the Cape Fear River. The house and the grounds are just beautiful. A prime example of 19th Century south.
