Salem Lake
jmpncsu Says:
Salem Lake is a 365-acre lake with a 7-mile trail around it just southeast of downtown. Currently, there are no water activities due to dam construction but normally boats can be rented and its a popular spot for fishing. There is also a fishing station with staff who can...

River Run Film Fest
janesgsd Says:
River Run Film Fest is held every year in late spring -- around the end of April. Films are shown at the Stevens Ctr, the Garage, NCSA and a few other locations that I can't recall at the moment. Most of the films are quite good, and there is a tremendous selection from...
Downtown!
janesgsd Says:
Check out Downtown/4th & Trade Street districts on Friday and Sat night for live jazz and blues. Most of the restaurants are fairly decent, and some are now starting to offer outdoor patio seating. The number of restaurant choices is increasing -- I think that 4 or 5 new...

Romantic getaway or just traveling in comfort: Winstoon Salem's best B&B
Deborahtnc Says:
Frommers calls this, " the most sophisticated, elegant, and adult-oriented B&B in Winston-Salem, the kind that appeals to worldly business travelers and romantic couples." ( Frommer's Guides )I would have to agree. There are 2 houses on Summit St., I have stayed at both. It...
Foothills Brewing: Good Beer and Food
jmpncsu Says:
Foothills Brewing is a small microbrewery and restaurant on W 4th Street right in downtown Winston-Salem. The food is pretty good, just the usual bar food - burgers, sandwiches, etc. and smaller late night menu. But the real reason to visit is the beer! They have about 8...

6th & Vine at the intersection of Trade St and 6th is one of the best places to eat -- it's reasonable and has a great wine selection. Outdoor seating is also avail.Sweet Potatoes on Trade is another great find -- lots of great soul food.Avoid the Bistro 420 on 4th St --...
Red Rooster: New Country- the Future of Night Life
jackelly3 Says:
Red Rooster is my favorite spot in Winston. The club offers dancing both country and college, live music and DJs, large open dance floor and vip rooms, and of course pool tables and the bull. I am not a huge country fan but Red Rooster hits the spot.

The Speak Easy on 4th, across from the Stevens Ctr, is a great place for local jazz. They also offer latin dance lessons on Tuesdays for free. Heidi also makes a mean martini.Thea's House of Blues (its either on Liberty or on Trade St., I can't remember) is good for blues,...
Car
A car is your best bet. Taxis are often very nasty, unreliable, and expensive. Also, the drivers are quick to rip you off by taking the long way around. If you must take a cab, keep the trip short and call Joe's Taxi.

Hanes Mall
Helpfulness
janesgsd 10 reviews
Unless you don't have a mile within 200 miles of your hometown, avoid Hanes Mall. It's expensive, cheap-looking, and attracts a rough crowd on weekend nights.
Unique Suggestions: Go during the day, prefereably early in the morning before the "Mall Rats" have time to surface.
Fun Alternatives: Check out Thruway on S. Stratford and the downtown arts district.

Pure and simple....
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: ... it's hotter than h*** during the summer. Winter is unpredictable -- we are prone to ice instead of snow, or we could very well have 70 degree temps in Jan. Best to check out www.weather.com first.
