Mandan Things to Do

There were two stockades where Lewis and Clark wintered over during their expedition: Fort Clatsop in Oregon and Fort Mandan in North Dakota. Replicas of each fort have been built, and this one is a fine example that gives insight into how the expedition members passed a cold winter. It was a military expedition with discipline, and the structure of the fort reflects this. A triangular stockade, it sits a few minutes walk from the Missouri River. Photographers: there is a lot to shoot here - the stockade, inside photos of the barracks, cottonwood trees, the Missouri, architectural details. A digital camera with zoom lens and flash works well here.
