The Lewis and Clark Expedition encountered a thriving set of villages along the Missouri, one of which was here at Knife River. The National Park Service has done a great job of preserving the historical site and artifacts from the village. There is also a reconstructed earth lodge to aid the visitors experience. But we really liked the trail through the site to the river. Nature is reclaiming what man had built. Photographers: this is challenging, because how do you artistically show what is essentially a meadow with depressions. I used a zoom lens a lot. Unfortunately, the lighting was flat. Early or late lighting might help bring out the contours better.

Just north of town is Knife River Indiana Village National Historical Site. Step into a reconstructed earthlodge and imagine boiling buffalo meat in a clay pot or pounding corn with a mortar and pestle. View the artistry of everyday and ceremonial clothing, bags, and implements. Listen to memories of traditional Hidatsa Indian life, then walk through the past to the Sakakawea site, where earthlodge depressions hint of their life in a vibrant village, alive with games, ceremonies, and trade.
