    Getting to know the wilds

by sarahandgareth Written Aug 18, 2003

The Caprock Coulee trail in the North Unit is an excellent interpretive trail that gives an insight into the geology and flora of the Park. It's not a very long trail - just 1.6 miles - but is very informative, with regular stops to explain a variety of features, including the formation of the badlands landscapes, and the plant and animal life found in the area.

The landscape sometimes looks relatively barren - it's not a desert, but it can get very dry! - but the trail points you towards an array of things you might not otherwise have spotted, such as the different varieties of sagebrush and grass, never mind the petrified wood which you can see at ground level and sometimes high up on the side of coulees.

You will also see some of the most remarkable caprocks, hard rocks on high columns of softer material, isolated by erosion - and doomed, one day, to fall back to earth.

As always I enjoyed meeting and talking to the people along the way. I talked to three nice rangers and a volunteer. The other rangers asked me not to post their photos here.

If you tour the park in the spring you will see a profusion of colorful flowers. I was too late in the season for most of the flowers.

As with the South Unit, there are herds of bison in the park. The ones on the North Unit did not approach as close as the ones in the South Unit; but there were more of them.

This overlook gives you a great view of the series of buttes, mesas and valleys forming the badlands.

One of the first stops along the Scenic Drive is the Skyline Vista. There are interpretive signs there and a nice view of the beginnings of the badland.

Also inside the visitors center is a small museum that has several displays about the area, Roosevelt, and his love of the badlands.

Roosevelt National Park houses many different species of wildlife. Evenings are the best time of the day to see and meet the animals.
