The scrap metal sculptures on the Enchanted Highway are either a priceless piece of Americana or a dreadful tourist trap. I can envision a harried father pulling off to see the sights after being pestered by the kids for the last 100 or so miles. There is really no indication that in order to see the sculptures you will have to travel a narrow tar and gravel highway for 35 miles one way to see all the sculptures. At milepost 35 you will find yourself in Regent, ND which has a population of 268 and the sole services in the town consist of a corny souvenier shop that sells Enchanted Highway paraphanalia. Yes, it could be quite grim for the family patriarch who does not possess a sense of humor. However, I was curiously enthralled with the giant sculptures. I'm just glad that they exist in North Dakota and not close to my town.

  • I would say the biggest tourist trap in North Dakota would be 'Tommy the Turtle' in Bottineau. If you like statues of giant animals it's perfect. If not, don't waste your time.

Fort Mandan historic site. If one follows the signs for miles and miles, the path ends at 2 miles from the fort's original location. The reconstructed fortress is worth the visit.

Before you plan your trip: visit the fort's website at:

    Fort Mandan

Stop at the reconstructed fort - don't try to drive up to its original location.

  • It is very easy to fall asleep at the wheel because along Interstate 94 it is nothing but grassland.
