To get to North Dakota you can take any kind of transportation. Bus, airplane, car, train, etc.
To get around North Dakota the best way is by car. The cities are very far apart (on average about 2-4 hours). Take your own car, or rent a car.

  • There are airports in Minot, Grand Forks, and Fargo. They are all part of the Northwest Airlines system. You can also take Amtrack. It has many stops throughout the state. Or, you can drive. We have two major interstates running through the state. Or you may opt for taking a bus.
You will need a car to get around. Towns, and attractions are far apart here.

  • Dad's 1957 Chevy Coupe. Red and White with leather seats and a 45 record player in the dash. Now these were some sporty wheels!

  • North Dakota has major (for North Dakota at least) airports in Fargo in the East, and Minot and Bismarck in the central part of the state. There are smaller regional type airports in Williston or Dickinson in the west although it is probably much cheaper to fly into Billings, Montana and rent a car to get to those two cities.

Amtrak goes from Fargo to Devil's Lake to Minot to Williston on the Empire Builder.
Greyhound bus service also is available.

  • Because of the fairly straight hwys in N. Dakota, I would recomend taking Hyw. #2 or 52 from Minot. I have talked to people that have taken Hwy 52 & they say it is quite nice.

One thing North Dakota has over South Dakota is that the train from Chicago to Seattle (and back) passes through it and makes a bunch of stops. While riding, you can go to the cafe car and get food, go to the dining car where you choose from a menu and get served by waiters, or sit around in the lounge car, sipping a drink and reading or watching the scenery through the gigantic windows. Or just go to a coach seat and sleep; compared to a bus or a plane, the coach seats are huge, and unfold in all kinds of ways to make lying down more comfortable. The only minus is that the Amtrak doesn't pass through Bismarck.

The stops, by the way, are: Fargo, Grand Forks, Devil's Lake, Rugby, Minot, Stanley and Williston. Opposite order if you're going east.
