Please WATCH OUT! if visiting North Dakota during the winter (which is between October-March) the roads can be very dangerous because of snow, black ice, rain, hail. Drive slow and BEWARE other drivers as well. Some people seem to just not care and drive 80 through this stuff. BE CAREFUL! I've seen plenty of cars in the ditch and it's way to cold to be stuck in the snow with the wind chill and 50 degrees below 0!!!

Weather is very unpredictable here, so be prepared! Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes can grip the prarie side in no time. Raging blizzards can last days, and are very difficult to drive in, so don't chance it. Make sure you have a cell phone, and a winter survival kit in your car at all times. Do not let your car get below half a tank in the winter in case you get stuck in the road. Your gas tank may also freeze if you keep it under half a tank. If the weather looks threatening, don't chance it out on the roads. Most of all, drive responsibly for the road conditions!

  • It is really cold. I don't mean cold like you think cold. You think that you can layer and beat the cold. I mean cold that is cold to anyone except a marine mammal.

Winter in North Dakota can get very cold. The fact that the wind really blows across the open land can cause windchill factors down to 70 degrees F below zero. When it gets this cold, the condensation from your breath freezes instantly on your scarf, hat, moustache, eyebrows, it can be very dangerous if your are not prepared for it. If you are driving across the state from November through March, make sure you listen to the weather reports and carry some sort of emergency kit in your car.

  • Interstate 94 or US 2 are the only avenues across the state from east-west, and I-29 is the only practical road north-south. In the winter, be very careful on the shoulder seasons, in December and March. When it is near freezing here, it can ice and make the world one big rink.

Deeper in the winter (January or February) the utter depths of cold can make even a breakdown in Fargo city limits dangerous. Several years back, a number of boy scouts froze to death during a blizzard, despite being within city limits just south of the airport.

  • one word: UNPREDICTABLE!! I am talking about the wild buffalo in national parks. If you by chance get close to one do not go up to it, keep your distance. While, they may look lazy and harmless, you can not predict if they will charge you or not. I don't know personally, but it would be uncomfortable to get a sharp horn up your butt(or elsewhere). Side note: both male and females have horns.

North Dakota has a lot of prickly pear cactus once you get west of the Missouri River. They will cause you to get a flat in your bicycle tire unless you use "slime" a latex you shoot inside your tube which plugs the holes as they happen. The cactus are tough to see because they are usually camoflaged by what little grass grows in the semi-arid regions of the state.

    Thunderstorm on the Plains
    by pipsqueak
The weather can change suddenly out on the plains. What looked like an isolated cloudburst soon turned into a torrential downpour that forced us to pull to the side of the road because it was raining and blowing too hard to drive safely.
