National Monuments

by melosh

As you might expect US politicians have expanded the meaning of 'national monuments' to include as is stated on a internet listing, "a trove of quirky natural features, historic sites, and wide, wild open spaces". These sites can have camping, hiking trails, water rafting opportunities just like national parks. Many are difficult to reach with public transportation.

Acclaimed to be the first crossing of the North American Continenent (it wasn't). The 1st crossing was through the Canadian Rockies. Lewis & Clark are among the most famous. 1) it was an official exploration. 2) they took notes, drawings and survey sightings. 3) wildlife (skins) were sent back 4) Nobody died from hostilities. 5) Men & women; Black, white, & red; landed & working class; shared the hardhips and the decisions.East to west:Text in red are courtesy of other VTr'sWood River Camp, Alton, Illinois (near St. Louis)Jefferson National Exp. The soldier, Kenai Fjords, Alaska

by goingsolo

She was young, maybe early 20s and quiet as we boarded the boat from Seward harbor. The water was rough that day, although it was promised to be calmer when we arrived at Aialik Bay for kayaking. She introduced herself as a soldier stationed in Fairbanks and spent the morning by herself on the deck, while everyone else huddled in the interior cabin, avoiding the rain and temps which hovered in the 30s. Aialik Bay was calm, but dense fog made it difficult to see more than a few feet. Since we were both traveling alone, we were paired up in a kayak. I've been around water all my life and have had virtually no fear of it since learning to swim at age 5. I was a strong swimmer who could hold my own in anything short of a rip current. But, as we were set adrift in the kayak and began floating towards the horizon, a feeling of unease came over me. I could imagine us drifting out to the open...

The Denver Five. Denver, CO

by goingsolo

In the United States, as in many countries, the concept of "breaking bread" has meaning beyond the meal being consumed. It is a time for families and friends to share in stories, company and the like. It is one of those rituals that symbolize the need of human beings to come together . And, at times, particularly those unexpected, this everyday custom can bring together strangers. It was a Saturday night in Denver and I was dining alone. I managed to get a table near the bar at a popular and crowded restaurant. Sitting solo at a table for four, I noticed a group standing nearby, awkwardly balancing their drinks. I asked if they would like the unused seats. To my surprise, they all sat down to join me for dinner. They were 5 people in their 40s, all residents of Denver. My table, spacious only a moment before, became crammed as 6 people now shared it, but it harldy seemed uncomfortable. As...

The American Dream. Philadelphia, PA

by goingsolo

People talk about the "American Dream" and the US being the "Land of Opportunity". Many view these terms as meaningless. This capitalist land makes us want for material things at times, which often seem out of our grasp. The quest to strike ones personal pot of gold makes it easy to forget the important things. We took a family trip to Philadelphia, the city where my father was born and raised. After a couple of days visiting the tourist sites and eating local food, my father drove us to a poorer section of town and pulled up in front of an old and decaying house so unlike the comfortable suburban neighborhood we knew as home. We were pretty curious as to why we were here. My father told us that this was the house where he grew up. Even at this young age, we'd heard stories about how he worked through college and medical school because there was no money for either, taking every job he...

A Little Slice of Heaven. Lamar, CO

by goingsolo

I met Liz while staying at a bed and breakfast in Salida, Colorado. She and her husband live on a ranch in Lamar, Colorado. In addition to tending to the ranch, Liz volunteers at the visitors center in Southeast Colorado. Although she's lived in the state for 50 years, she tells me that she still hasn't seen everything. The ranchlands of southeast Colorado are not what they once were. Liz and her husband loved their wide open space. But, in recent years, neighboring ranchers have sold their land to developers intent on building single family homes. Liz sighs as she tells me this, disappointment etching her friendly face. "Its getting to the point where the view of the land is spoiled by the sight of your neighbors backyard." Growing up in Miami, I can't related. But, after driving through the wide open spaces of Colorado and witnessing the jaw dropping beauty, I can empathize. But Liz is...

Can I give you a hug? Mt Charleston, NV

by goingsolo

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most celebrated holidays in the US. It dates back to the 1st US settlers who feasted along with Native American Indians. The modern tradition expanded to include parades and the start of the higly commercialized Christmas season. But, most of all, its a time when families usually come together. Thanksgiving on the road is a mixed bag. On one hand, its the only week which contains a 4 day holiday weekend, a blessed rarity in the American work year. This makes it a great time to get away. But getting away means breaking the family tradition. And going solo means not only being alone, but being alone on a day set aside for anything but. For numerous reasons, I braved it in the fall of 2004 and found myself in Mt Charleston, Nevada on this day of American family tradition. I'd just sat down for a late Thanksgiving Day solo dinner (serves me right for not making...

Across the Cultural Divide, Miami, FL

by goingsolo

Miami is diverse. This brings positive & negative as a Latin American influx expanded cultural opportunities while language barriers create tension between the old & new. Driving home from an awful workday, I ruminated about how bad people can be. A disconcerting repetitive thud from my rear tire interrupted my thoughts. I pulled over and, as I feared, I had a flat. Due to a combo of an ineffective road side assistance provider & an equally substandard cellular provider, I was truly stuck. This wasn't the best neighborhood & it was getting dark.Opening the trunk, I attempted to convince myself that my education could translate into tire changing ability. A woman approached, not quite 5 feet tall and who could be someone's grandmother. She indicated to my tire & said something in Spanish that I couldn't understand. Yes, it's flat, I responded, my frustration level high. I lacked energy...

The single mom, Grand Canyon, AZ

by goingsolo

At Indian Gardens campground, I struck up a conversation with a woman at the neighboring campsite, a solo female hiker. Sheila lives in Lake Montezuma, just outside of Sedona. She's a small woman but carries a large load of camping gear and supplies to last throughout her 2 week trek across the Tonto Trail, an exposed and isolated region of the Canyon where water and people are scarse. She's been averaging about 12 to 14 miles per day and sleeping nearly 12 hours per night to regain the strength to carry on the next day. Another person living her version of the dream.
