New Glarus, Wisconsin

by richiecdisc

New Glarus, WI is not a cute made for tourist Swiss town which is what you might think at first glance. Though indeed tourist do flock here to soak in the Swiss ambiance, it is such due to the high concentration of Swiss people who immigrated here and founded the town in 1845, naming it after the Canton of Glarus in their home country. With most hotels and restaurants in the chalet style, flower beds the norm and the Swiss flag as popular as the US one, it is no wonder so many people fall in love with the place on first visit. Toss in some very authentic Swiss food, a bakery or two and one of the finest breweries in the region, and it's surprising that even more people don't pay it a visit.Of course, for me, New Glarus Brewing was what brought me to this little hamlet. As so often is the case, my quest for beer leads me to great places I would have missed otherwise.

Cadillac Ranch

by richiecdisc

The Yellow Rose of Texas, Amarillo, lies smack dab in the middle of the narrowest part of the state which spans a mere two and a half hours across. This makes the drive a lot less daunting than driving through from the Louisiana border to El Paso on Texas western perimeter, nearly a twelve hour jaunt. It also brings you along the Texas portion of Route 66. Other than that, there isn't much of a reason to embark across this very flat and barren stretch of the country. Oh, unless you like Cadillacs that is. Home to the Cadillac Ranch and in an odd way to one of the great embodiments of the American Dream, Amarillo is on a lot more people's lists of stops across the USA than it would otherwise be.

Oklahoma City

by richiecdisc

“Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty” Nat King Cole sang in “Route 66” and that was all I knew of the Oklahoma state capitol until some deranged minds decided that their discontent should be taken out on about a thousand innocent people. If nothing else, it showed that Americans can be just as good a terrorist as our more routinely feared enemies. Prior to that, the fair citizens of the pretty city were branded ultra conservative when they not only banned the German film, “The Tin Drum” as child pornography but sent their local police out to private homes to confiscate copies. I guess on such a flat horizon, people have to make their own molehills. The city has built a moving monument to the atrocity which should not be missed but driving to and away, I tried to keep Nat's more complimentary description more in mind. It didn't seem particularly apropos but neither did the idea that someone...

Little Rock

by richiecdisc

Little Rock was little more than a short stop on a six month trip across country, a place to stretch our legs and have a beer on a long drive. It certainly was a pleasant enough place to do that. The River Market area was small and scenic with lots of places to eat, drink and shop. I imagine there are some sites in the biggest town in Arkansas but we had neither the time nor inclination to seek them out. What we did find was a nice little town in Middle America, perfectly situated between Memphis and Oklahoma City. If you're driving that route, by all means stop by.In Arkansas.

Tip Photo
panhandle of Florida

by richiecdisc

The panhandle of Florida is noted for snow white beaches and glorious sunsets. It stretches for many miles from the center of the state, bending sharply towards and eventually to Alabama. Though I've never been a huge fan of the west coast of Florida due to it being on a fairly flat gulf rather than an ocean, I have always wanted to see this area to make a better decision about its beauty since I'd primarily been relegated to the lower portion of the coast. You can't very well drive out west from Florida via New Orleans and not pass through the panhandle and that's what I had already done a few times without so much as a cursory stop. So, with a brewpub I'd never been to on the horizon and some white sand as a lure we found ourselves heading right that way. What we stumbled upon quite by chance was beyond our wildest imagination and we owe it all to our barman of all people. Thanks.

Tip Photo
Ybor City

by richiecdisc

Ybor City is not an obvious stop that comes to mind when planning a cross country tour of the United States. But when you're saying goodbye to your country for what you think is the last time and you're starting from your home of many years in South Florida it makes about as much sense as any. With its wrought iron balconies and cool little pubs it could pass for a poor man's New Orleans but it's small and doesn't invite much more than a cursory visit. In fact, this was an early morning one en route to swim with the manatees in nearby Crystal River that also took in lunch at the city's brewpub. Oh, I didn't mention beer? Well, why else would I have come here in the first place? My wife got her manatees and I got my beer and we began a dream six month trip around the USA that would take us to far greater places. But first things first. On the west coast of Florida.

Tip Photo
Orient, South Dakota

by richiecdisc

Why Orient, South Dakota ? It's kind of on the way between Denver and Philadelphia. Well, that is if you want to drop by New Glarus, Wisconsin and wouldn't mind stopping in Badlands National Park. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt if you have a friend who has a farm in Orient and he promises you a ride in a tractor. I guess what it all boils down to is you have to want to experience middle America in all its often boring glory. Don't fret that locals won't be voting for Obama Bin Laden as they like to refer to our next President of the United States, they don't mean no harm. No, in fact, they are a friendly lot who will feed and treat you as if kin even if times are tough. Oil down, so is grain. But not these folks. You might not see eye to eye with them but after a few days you'll at least see their point. You'll drive away perhaps not agreeing but understanding that where you live does in fact...

Tip Photo
Boulder, CO

by richiecdisc

Boulder is one of those ultra cool towns in Colorado that any nature/adventure loving junkie would love to call home but unfortunately that popularity has placed it out of most of those very people's price ranges. As it stands, it's a great getaway for Denver natives as well as people visiting the Rockies from further afield. It is an affable, amenity-laden gateway town to nature at its very best and those natural attractions can be just on the town's periphery or a bit further like Rocky Mountain National Park. Though it has grown considerably, it remains largely a walkable place or better yet, choose a bike, the locals' favorite mode of transportation.Another little gem in Colorado.

Tip Photo
Fort Collins

by richiecdisc

Fort Collins is one of those cool towns we would love to live in. There may be no sights per se and architectural marvels are slim to none but it is surrounded by beautiful nature. The town attracts an active and liberal thinking populace; riding a bike to work is not uncommon. Well, at least the people working at New Belgium Brewing. Oh, that's why we stopped here. I admit it, it was the beer.In the cool state of Colorado.

Tip Photo
Jackson

by richiecdisc

As if Grand Teton National Park was not grand enough in its own right, it just so happens to have one of the great National Park gateway towns right on its doorstep: Jackson. Sure, it's touristy and a bit overblown but Jackson is full of not only amenities but also lots of wild west charm even if in a Disney kind of way. As the hub of not only the two National Parks to the north of it, but also the National Elk Refuge literally on top of it and countless ski resorts that make it a year round destination. While trinket shops litter its western-style covered walkways they are interspersed with many fine shops offering the best in outdoor gear and clothing. Restaurants for all budgets do well in the rare tourist town with no real off-season. Jackson is a prosperous little town and a pleasant one too. Oh, did I forget to mention it is home to one of the top brewpubs in the Rockies? Hop on...
