Lazaretto Point Light - 1985 Replica of 1831 Light
This lighthouse is located on the Patapsco east of Baltimore City on the end of the pier of the Lehigh Cement Corporation. It is often almost obscured by ships being loaded almost in front of it. The last time we were there by boat, I could only see it coming east on the Patapsco. This apparently was a perennial problem because by 1883 the area around the depot had been extensively developed with many large buildings leading to complaints that the light was too short to be seen coming up the river to the harbor. By 1920 the light was considered almost useless because it could not be seen due to all the buildings. In 1926 the Lighthouse Board gave up and erected a taller steel skeleton tower to replace the old lighthouse.
