Lazaretto Point Light - 1985 Replica of 1831 Light

by grandmaR

This lighthouse is located on the Patapsco east of Baltimore City on the end of the pier of the Lehigh Cement Corporation. It is often almost obscured by ships being loaded almost in front of it. The last time we were there by boat, I could only see it coming east on the Patapsco. This apparently was a perennial problem because by 1883 the area around the depot had been extensively developed with many large buildings leading to complaints that the light was too short to be seen coming up the river to the harbor. By 1920 the light was considered almost useless because it could not be seen due to all the buildings. In 1926 the Lighthouse Board gave up and erected a taller steel skeleton tower to replace the old lighthouse. This light went into service on September 27, 1926 and the next day work began on demolishing the old tower. The original 31 foot tall brick tower was built here because...

New Jersey.. off the beaten path

by JJfromNJ

It depends on how much time you want to spend. The drive from New York to Atl City will pass plenty of towns on the Jersey shore. Belmar is a very nice, rich town. Lots of big houses, quaint shops. Seaside isn't as upscale, but it has a good boardwalk with rides, games, etc. Long Beach Island is more for the party crowd; lots of clubs, restaurants, etc.Another popular thing to do is the Cape May/Lewes Ferry. After leaving Atlantic City, drive to Cape May (the southern point of New Jersey). It's a really nice ride and it drops you off in Delaware, just a short distance from DC. Of course this will skip Philadelphia, but you could stop there after DC if you don't mind the detour. Also, if you want to swing it, Princeton is well worth stopping in for a few hours. It's located in the middle of the NYC, Philadelphia, Atlantic City triangle.

Brookgreen Gardens - a lovely oasis

by margaretvn

This is a beautiful large garden in South Carolina, the gardens have been designated as a National Historic Landmark. In 1932 Archer and Anna Hyatt opened this wonderful (non-profit making) garden or outdoor museum with its beautiful sculptures and the beautiful and majestic living oaks. There are parths to follow through quiet gardens, there is the Lowcountry History trail and the zoo with its native animals. there is a good gift shop and a restaurant. The collection of sculptures are set in the gardens and in two indoor galleries. There are over 1200 sculptures in the collection today and they cover the whole history of American sculpture from the early 1800's.The Lowcountry trail shows the history of the great rice plantations of the 1800's and the animals and palnts of the Lowcountry.open daily 9.30 - 5 pm and on evenings during special eventsclosed Christmas Dayon highway 17 between...

Check out www.roadsideamerica.com for some quirky things to see. I have my heart set on the Alien Crash Landing Site in LA. It's not a spooky circular clearing in some wood as I first imagined, but a model spaceship crashed into/attached to a discount electronics store and you can eat a burger in the front half of a car while watching a movie in the diner...the mind boggles. I've just got to go there. This site is worth a look or two, if you've got a sense of humour to go with your sense of adventure. And it's free ;)

Driving from Idaho to Montana

by DPando

I loved so much I15. This road was so beautiful above all in Idaho border with Montana. It crosses from the shorter part of the state and the road is surrounded by flatter plains with some exception in Id Pocatello. After Idaho Falls the road is perfect to feel asleep as i did (lol) i had to stop in Dubois gas station to take a break.. my eyes shutted down so easily despite the coffees i drank. But my eyes wide open again just in Montana border... wow such an scenario Targhee and Beaverhead Nationa forests offer a beautiful scenario.. the road is higer upon the level sea and the white snowy peaks on your left welcomes you to the amazing Montana. Towns like Monida or Lima doesnt offer nothing at all but with these views....the road keep on going to Butte fork where the I15 ends before pass the Melrose canyon where the mountains streched the valley..was great drive just by there. Once i...

Flathead Lake (MT)

by DPando

This lake is so so long and it takes so many time from the beautiful town called Polson at the southern lakeshore to Sommers in the northern part before to reach Kalispell.. it has several beautifull nooks of land and water with so many houses on the shores...looks like a second-home for many people .. and i undersand it because its a lovely place and area ! that day i was driving since 4.45 am from Pleasant Grove (UT) crossing half Utah .. the shorter part of Idaho (eastern) towards Butte (MT) where finishes I15N. From there i refound the I90W through Missoula, a beautiful landscape join you alltogether with the road works . 2 miles after Missoula there's a fork to the right to Pablo and other towns.. My destination was the Glacier NP .. when i got the west entrance i reckoned that i were driving for 11-12 h that day almost non-stoping!!Last 2 pictures were taken in the gap from Somers...

Whitefish. MT

by DPando

such a joy when i got Whitefish, my dream was at hand.. visit Glacier National park. After a long day driving since 4.45am from UT upper end I got this small but nice town around 1830. I stopped just a moment to buy some food on a huge mall and i kept on moving. the approach to Whitefish from Kallispell is a straight road after leaving the bending road that follow the lakeshore. the weather was coldish and almost snowy.. such a change with sunny Utah and Nevada.. but it was fantastic .. the Glacier was just there 4 or 5 miles ahead.. in these pictures you can see some views from the town to the West entrance to Glacier .. after that the weather got worse and start to sleet. 4th picture is the entrance to the park !!

Salt plains, Utah

by DPando

All these pictures were taken on a long driving day from San Francisco to Pleasant Grove (UT) 20 miles south to Salt Lake city where my friend lives. Was a lovely day leaving the lovely SF in a foggy morning, passing by Sacramento, the forests before get Tahoe Lake. I remember the snowed mountains and the cold outside !! wow looked like a high mountain pass. then the ugly Reno with tall buildings in the middle of nothing else (was a weird impression)) and the I80E for hours driving before to get Wendower.. the border among Nevada and Utah.. i remember i stopped to pump gas in my Toyota Yaris (such a good deal because it hardly ask for gas lol) and keeped drive further... was a surprise i got to watch all the salt plains of Utah and the unended straight road !! wow such an awesome moment despite the highway patrol trying to chase me. Was a lovely moment after 11 or 12 h driving... i miss...

Natural Bridges NM, Utah

by DPando

From Mexican Hat (AZ) there's 261 road that leads straight to the cliff but before visit San Juan river bends from the top of a cliff (like horseshoe bend in Page) taking the fork to the left (road 316)... after take a look .. go back to 261 and go straight .. there's a huge and tall cliff in front of you... the road its extremmely stepped and vary tarmac with gravel and unpaved spam of road ..amzing !!!! ... once on the top you have a wonderful sight from Monument Valley on the right ... following the road for quite time ..you pass forests and forests, quite tricky for the possible chance that any deer cross the road with no notice. Its quite risky !! ..at the end i took the fork to the left to take route 95.. just 2 miles ahead there's the fork to the National Monument... the paved Road gets to you to some pullovers where you can watch at the arches .. there are some trails to do !!...

Navajo Bridge, Arizona

by DPando

I left Page (AZ) that morning towards Grand Canyon North Rim. I admit that i missed out to go to Horshoeback next to Page .. my fault. So i drove along route 89 south passing by a slice in the mountain (Antelope pass) and an impressive view from the top of that cliff over Bitter Springs and Navajo Bridge to the right.. there's a pullover on the road where piles of people beheld the fascintating and desertic panorama.. Amazing view... the road drops steep and fast to the fork of bitter springs (nothing to see, nothing to offer, no place to take a coffee) and i turned right driving paralel to the cliff in the middle of the desert with the Colorado river meandering on my left.. the road finally turns to the crossing Colorado by the Navajo bridge a beautiful structure with 2 small rest area at both sides (marble canyon).. the further one has a visitor's center where i took the picture with...
