Utah adventures

by DPando

So before entering in Utah i had dinner in a great mexican restaurant in Evanston (WY) after a long day trip by that state. Just after that i slept in the I80 Rest area located in the former canyon of Salt Lake closer to Emory and 2 miles before the junction of Echo.Next day i could enjoy of the great view with daylight (was amazing) but not better than Park city on the route 40S. I didnt realize that there it was the main venue for Salt Lake Olympics. The views to the lake are terrific and the road follows to Heber and Charleston where i found Deer Creek state park an amazing bending and narrow road into a canyon that leads to Provo (that is Provo canyon)The other canyon is Price, crossing Uinta NF, this is bleaker and dryer and dustier than not the other but after Price town the road becomes straight and isolated in the desert with huge blocks of rocky mountains at the far east!! its...

Uinta NF, Utah

by DPando

I ve been twice or thrice in Utah during those 2 months, i have to say thanks to La Beba (vt member) for her kindness and hospitality and for all the people that i met thanks to her and for get the chance to discover Timpanogos mts next to where she is living in Utah .. My first aproach to Utah was from Wyoming after leaving Yellowstone and driving all way south through a cowboys land.. was terrific see how they move their herds. Really beautiful landscape was the route 89 from Alpine to Smoot, flat valleyroad with mountain at both sides and this on the left side where i was enjoying a great view of everything from the higher level of the tarmac. Besides from Smoot to Geneva the valley becomes a mountain and the road stepper with hardly cars on both sides and amazing views of the forest . This is the Uinta NF

Snake River

by DPando

Other great surprise on my 2 months trip was Grand Canyon of Snake River almost in the border among Wyoming and Idaho. I took a quick look into Teton NP after visit Yellowstone.. i reckon i had spend more time in Teton and take pat in some hikes in the mountains but other time will do it... so i moved southwards towards Salt Lake city this afternoon and after pass by Hoback Junction and Hoback i stare a the amazing landscape in front of me, on the upper pat of the canyon the views are more impressive than not at the end of the canyon but nevermind its a lovely journey and there are some pullovers on the road to make pictures or drop to the river and practice kayaking or other river sports.. !! Wyoming is one of the best states in US

Tip Photo
South Dakota

by DPando

I crossed the flat South Dakota from the southern east end to the west to get Wyoming. The most impressive thing in South Dakota is the sudden change of landscape in the area of Black Hills in the southwest part (Custer town and Mount Rushomore) .. driving all way long in the I80W all fields are goldish and flat just some hills break the flatter state and sudenly the mountains appears after the beautifull Badlands .. a geological interaction of water and wind !!I loved to be there

Tip Photo
Mississipi in Dubuque (IA)

by DPando

After lose my way several times in the farmland of Wisconsin around towns like Monroe, Hazel Green or others smaller. I got the local road 11/80 crossing Cuba city to take finally the state 151 towards Dubuque where i could behold the huge Mississipi river splitting the city in two.. i remember a great views from the western part once in the route 20 towards Waterloo

Tip Photo
Moab (UT)

by DPando

I reckon that i was very impressed about the development of Moab.. i checked some of the village before to go but once there the town was very nice and with all kind of services and next to several attractions like Canyonlands and Arches at north and needdles at the south with Colorado river crossing it at its entrance.. Its a real good stop to hike around this area !!

Boundary Peak 13140 ft

by DPando

I crossed several times Nevada (3 or 4) by different places. Stiffling hot was the main word to define that one.. after leaving Pleasant Grove (UT) at first time in the morning with all the mountains white by the snow i drove towards Holden by I15S and i took the fork to the right to Delta (UT) driving by route50 to Ely (NV).The road to Ely was amazing ..flat and wide valleys like an ocean surrounded at times by mountains (Schell Creek Range) and by canyons at Snake range with huge erosioned peaks at both sides in a bending amazing and lonely roadFrom Ely i took the road 6 southwestwards driving by the desert... several miles in a straight and dizzy by the hot sun road through Warm Springs (awful place) and after Toponah, a mid-range town at the top of a hill in the middle of the desert where i just can detach the airport several miles before you reach the town.. And finally just in the...

Tip Photo
Bighorn canyon

by DPando

This Bighorn canyon in Wyoming is the gate to Yellowstone coming from Cody (Wy). As you can see all was burned, the same burn that destroy a huge part of Yellowstone.. the canyon is so beautifu and some waterfalls with a tourist office with useful information about geology of the area and some souvenirs. Its a nice stop for 10 min as farthe last picture posted is looking backwards once we left the canyon behind.. you could check it by google earth is awesome !!

MAGNIFICENT SANTA FE UNION STATION in SAN DIEGO

by AusPinay

(I have put this in off the beaten section as many would just pass by this station and fail to notice the unique architecture of this place, truly amazing!)After getting off aboard AMTRAK's PAcific Surfliner at San Diego's Union Station, we couldn't help but be in awe of the magnificent building inside and out! The imposing Spanish style architecture, depicts a Santa Fe design with marvelous front arches and colourful ceramic wall tile patterns, including a stylized version of Santa Fe's "box" logo. I was happy to wait for my cousin to pick us up as he was coming from NAtional City. We also didn't mind coming back around 8:30 that night to fetch our luggages which came on a later trip as the train we got into had no luggage compartment. Again we were so forgiving, despite our tiredness, having had around 14 hours of air travel from Sydney, a brief stop-over in San Francisco, then train...

RIVERWALK TOUR at Naperville Park

by AusPinay

Around Naperville, a quiet suburb outside Chicago, there are also lots to do and one of these is going on a riverwalk tour around Naperville Park.We were there in Spring of 2006 and the gardens were alive with colourful and lovely flowers, shrubs and lush trees. Doing the riverwalk was a pleasant and fun filled time for our family, being on a tight schedule. That day we were to go to Toronto and Niagara Falls, while my hubby was on his way back to take his flight to Sydney. So the time spent here was short, but was very memorable for us! It is also FREE so what a bargain! There were also ducks and some birds sharing the tranquil setting with us. Only a few locals were around and it was around midmorning.
