    Yankee Workshop

Located in the "oldest house in Berlin" (circa 1817), the YANKEE WORKSHOP. offers traditional Amish crafts. They had the porch decorated so wonderfully and as it is Halloween season, it was filled with pumpkins and related items. Well, they sure enticed me to come in. It was brimming with wonderful crafts, candles, Amish dolls, etc. all in a homey setting.

Guggisberg Cheese & Gift Shop: Home of the Original Baby Swiss

by deecat Written May 15, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Guggisberg Cheese Factory, Millersburg, OH 44654

In the Doughty Valley of Holmes County, Ohio, you will find a wonderful Cheese and Gift Shoppe, Cheese Factory, Chalet in the Valley Restaurant, and the Guggisberg Swiss Inn.

We visited the Cheese and Gift Shoppe, and purchased Baby Swiss and a spicey Swiss. But, we also had lots of fun sampling many different cheeses.

The people who work there are quite charming, friendly, and helpful.

The Amish farmers bring their milk to the Guggisberg Cheese Factory (for 50 years!); this milk is what gives the "Original Baby Swiss Cheese" its unique creamy flavor.

What to buy: Besides purchasing cheese, you can also stroll through the flower garden with its replica of the Swiss Matterhorn and miniature chalet. If you are really hungry, you may wish to dine in the Swiss Chalet (Chalet in the Valley Restaurant) that overlooks the Doughty Valley. They have Swiss, Austrian, and Amish cooking.

Or, you may want to watch cheese being produced from the showroom.

What to pay: Very Reasonable Prices

Miller's Dry Goods: Over 5,000 bolts of fabrics!

by deecat Written May 15, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sign for Miller's Dry Goods, Quilts

This store advertises "over 5,000 bolts of fabrics, sewing notions, quilts and craftbooks, patterns, local made quilts, wallhangings, tablerunners, rag rugs, and lots more".
They win for truth in advertising!

They have a fabric outlet in the basement.

Miller's Dry Goods has been around for 41 years! It was started in 1965 by an Amish woman, Amanda Miller. Amanda is now semi-retired, and her two daughters and daughter-in-law run the business.

What to buy: Since Jill is the one who does the quilting, she wrote her description and impressions:

"Miller's Dry Goods, established in 1965, sells both quilts and quilt fabrics. While we visited, we concentrated on the fabric location, a first floor and basement showing a wide assortment of traditional and contemporary fabrics, generally arranged by color.

I found exciting contemporary black and white fabric for my planned black, white, and green quilt in a log-cabin pattern. I also bought some reproduction fabric for a guilt I'm making that features Flying Geese Pattern.

There is also a quilt barn displaying completed quilts for sale."

    What to pay: Quite reasonable
