Southgate House - Birthplace of the Tommy gun by BeatChick, 4 more photos Ahhhh, the Southgate House, one of my FAVORITE PLACES, is located in a cool old Victorian manse where the Tommy Gun (early machine gun) was invented. I've seen my fave Cincy band, Fairmount Girls, play here along with my fave Columbus band, Howlin' Maggie. Always the best new bands, come here for something cool & eclectic. It was just 4 years ago that Sleater-Kinney opened up with a new upcoming relatively unknown band here (at that time), The White Stripes. Sometimes you might see one of Greg Dulli's (of Cincinnati favorite, Afghan Whigs) new bands playing here. Even saw Sheila E's brother here about 6 years back - Alejandro Escovedo! He jumped off stage with his guitar & meandered amidst the crowd singing & playing - just amazing in concert! They generally have live music in the bar but the best venues are down in the ballroom basement - coolest place! Upstairs in the renovated attic space is an art gallery. I met the bassist for Howlin' Maggie and he later gave me his 1st autograph ever! Technically not in Cincinnati but part of the "Greater Cincinnati Area" just across the river in Newport (which has fantastic views of Cincinnati across the Ohio River). Hours: Noon - 2:30am (7 days/week) UPDATE 9/20/05: Mr. Connolly & I showed up here 2 Saturdays ago to celebrate my upcoming b-day. We'd just had a faboo dinner at Café Istanbul & here we had a great time mulling over the artwork in the attic art gallery, checking out the locals & sipping beer & Amaretto Sours on the Victorian front porch! Kaldi's - my fave coffee shop by BeatChick Ahhh, this is my FAVORITE coffee shop in Cincinnati for so many reasons: *the coffee/espresso/lattes are divine & the have a fine selection of house coffees which includes alcohol in many of them (so it's sorta like a bar, too) *they have great jazz Friday/Saturday nights *they stay open RAWTHER late on the weekends (2am or so, late for Cincy) *part of the Main Street bars area so when you tire of the bar scene hop in here or if you need a caffeine jolt before dancing the night away then here is your best bet, too *it's just cool & eclectic with these floor-to-ceiling bookshelves crammed full of beat-down, battered used books - you may trade, buy or just browse *decor - I did mention this place was cool - has a wonderfully high molded ceiling, copper bar, whistling espresso machine *there is a smoking SIDE and a non-smoking side of the restaurant accessible only by a small doorway but the smoking side is where the jazz is played - naturellement! Great vegetarian offerings here, lots o' caffeine-infused drinks and tea. My favorite dish here is the red beans & rice platter piled so high you won't nearly finish it - served up with jalapenos, black olives, cheese, tomatoes - the whole freakin' shebang and all served up with their faboo house bread.

Would I be the Beat Chick if I didn't love Jazz??? ;D For a true jazz experience, head over to the Blue Wisp downtown and check out one of the visiting jazz combos playing styles as varied as bebop to fusion. The place is as classic as they get complete with smoky bar, man! Our illustrious young symphony conductor, Paavo Järvi, likes to pop in for a session when he's in town. Man cannot live by orchestral music alone! Please check out the wonderful work of my close friend & mentor, Sandye Utley, who does the Blue Wisp's website! UPDATE 9/20/05: Got a chance to pop back in (with my compadre, Sandye) last Friday night for my birthday after the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra season opening. Met the inimitable Art Gore, a fine fab jazz drummer who's played with George Benson! Marjean, the owner, fixed me up a martini with raspberry vodka, sweet&sour mix & a splash of cranberry juice - wunderbar! Please check out the website which was conceived & is maintained by my great friend, Sandye Utley.

Bogart's by BeatChick Everytime I hear the name Bogart's I think of Janeane Garofalo saying "Don't bogart the can, MAN!" in the movie Reality Bites (also starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke & Ben Stiller). I've seen They Might Be Giants (one of my fave bands EVER - you might recognize them as the band that does the theme song to Malcolm in the Middle or the from the Looney Tunes cartoon videos they did for "Istanbul, not Constantinople" and "Particle Man" - they are a fave band of Speilberg's, too), Erykah Badu (like Badu I'm-a tell you the truth!) & Built to Spill (I'd won tickets from WOXY radion station just in time for my birthday! - cool band, reminiscent of REM). Bogart's is a great venue - there was a time that members of REM would pop in just to do a show, Billy Corrigan's band Smashing Pumpkins used to do the same. It's an intimate setting for a concert, festival seating & serves beer (you can sit at table on the platform area at the back of the hall and eat or drink if you like). I prefer being crushed up against the front of the crowd!
Whatever - just show up looking cool! Leave a Comment Theme: ConcertAddress: 2621 Vine Street, Cincinnati, OH 45219Phone: (513) 281-8400Directions: On Old (or Short) Vine street in Corryville about a block south of Kroger'sWebsite: http://www.bogarts.com/

Sudsy Malone's Bar/Laundromat by BeatChick A unique concept in Cincinnati - a laundromat & bar playing live music! Do your laundry as you listen to the next up-and-coming cool band and drink a beer while you're doing it! One night I saw a ska/reggae band here called MU-330 right after I'd seen They Might Be Giants across the street at Bogart's. It was awesome - I was in music heaven!!

4th Curtain Call Full-House Standing Ovation by BeatChick, 4 more photos I went to Music Hall to hear the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra last spring, featuring André Watts, world-famous pianist, assisting on the Beethoven piece (middle section). We had a fabulous view of Mr. Watts' face (sitting in the box A seat on the right side of the music hall) as he was alternately pounding out & tickling the ivories of Beethoven's fabulous music. His lips he was syncopating in time to the music, almost as if he was using it as a metronome. He was wonderfully absorbed in his music so that I called him the Thelonious Monk of classical music. Yet he was perfectly engaged with the conductor, our wonderful Paavo Järvi, the famous Estonian maestro that is making quite a name for him while eliciting comparisons of our symphony to the New York Symphony. Paavo is amazing to watch – his hands & arms float on top of the music, responding to the "wind" of the music. Some moments, when the music is at its height, it seems that he is buffeted about like a sailboat in a Mediterranean storm but then you notice that he quickly takes command of the music – he is in control. He alternates between heavenly absorption in the music, his eyes closed, and open engagement of his symphony, his eyes darting about here and there to "speak" to this violinist or that percussionist waving his hand up or down dependent upon how loud or soft he wishes the music to be. His musicians dutifully respond and at the end of each piece he nods his assent, his face glowing with satisfaction, knowing they have played excellently while he has conducted beautifully.
Dress to the NINES, m'dear! Of course, black is always an excellent choice! Paavo said that Schumann/Schubert is one of his favorite composers’ music to conduct. Got all 3 autographs: Andre Watts, Paavo Järvi & Jonathan Holland, the composer of the new piece commemorating the National Underground Railroad museum opening. Paavo has studied with Leonard Bernstein in Los Angeles & Paavo's father was a famous Estonian composer as well. Paavo is quite young; born in 1962, just 5 years older than me. On stage, Paavo seems enormous, as if he is 6’ 5” but in person he is of average height. His cut of clothing is beautiful and he looks very elegant in his dark suit up on stage. No wonder he has symphony “betties”. His pictures make him seem cocky & arrogant but in reality he is very modest and he seems very humble regarding the adoration from the audience. He received several standing ovations & came back twice before leaving altogether. UPDATE 9/20/05: Attended opening night 9/16 & it was MAGNIFIQUE! An all-Beethoven program - Ode to Joy was never more beautiful! River Bend Music Center by kahunayummy "1997 Cyndi Lauper Concert" The concert atmosphere was wonderful. You could tell there were a lot of Cyndi fans in the lawn because as she came out, the people all around were crowding the railings to get a closer look. She started off with a really slow version of She Bop. It had a lot of soul. During her next number, the Ballad of Cleo and Joe, she made her way into the audience. Although her distance from the stage made ensemble work difficult, the effect she had on the crowd was amazing. She walked fairly close to where I was standing in the lawn and I could get a close up view of her hair (purple with pink streaks) and her outfit (a black slip dress). I Drove All Night rocked. Time After Time was really touching played acoustically on the dulcimer. She made several comments about preserving her modesty and the like. You Don't Know was also performed well. Sisters of Avalon followed-- this is my least favorite song on her new album-- and Jan Pulsford seemed to be drowning her out a little. Hey Now made a great closer, and I was really sad that the set was so short. I left shortly after Cyndi finished as Tina, legend though she is, just couldn't compare. Some Cyndi items were available: Sister's of Avalon T-shirt, "red lips" T-shirt (if someone could explain the meaning behind this I would appreciate it) and a watch. Overall, the concert was fabulous. I hope she tours again soon, preferably by herself. Sadly, her pregnancy will probably make this unlikely.

by kahunayummy Labor Day weekend means two things in Cincinnati. No work for most of us on Monday, and Riverfest on Sunday. The annual Riverfest Toyota-WEBN fireworks fills the Cincinnati skyline Sunday night. Hundreds of thousands of people line up early along the banks of the Ohio River to get a good view of the fireworks and to enjoy the Riverfest activities. Spectators have to allow plenty of time to get down to the river, because nearby streets are closed for the hugely popular event and many had to hike a distance from where they park their cars or bus stops. But the traffic hassle doesn't seem to stop people from coming back year after year. "Well, it's a Cincinnati tradition and I just enjoy fireworks," said a Spectator, of Amelia Ohio. "I was born on July 3 and it's always been a part of my life -- just to go see fireworks!" "The city puts on such a wonderful show for everybody," said a small child named Nash Alexander, of Manila, "and everybody gets so excited every year, cause it's like the end of the summer." "It is our big blow out," said Arlene Henson.

The Aronoff Center for the Performing Arts by kdoc13 Where can you go for Opera, Ballet, Orchestra, and Theatre all under one roof? The Aronoff Center! Kdoc loves the ballet! There is nothing like really skinny cute women hopping around rhythmically in tight outfits! But more than that, the Aronoff is where I saw Penn and Teller, and Cirque De Soliel.
Depends on the event. You can bet for most that a jacket and tie (long not bow) will be required. Check with the box office for more info. Leave a Comment
