I CELEBRATED MY 40TH BIRTHDAY HERE WITH MY FAB FOODIE FRIENDS (MaryG & Ebony) LAST NIGHT!!! Alas, in 2006 no restos garnered a 30 rating from Zagat's, its highest rating; only 8 restaurants in the entire country garnered a 29. But one of Cincy's own, Jean-Robert at Pigall's earned the top cumulative 29 rating! And this year Mobil (equivalent to Michelin in Europe) just gave them a 4-star rating! This is the pricey fabulous fusion French restaurant, owned & operated by former Maisonette head chef, Frenchman Jean-Robert de Caval (considered by many to be the best restaurant in the city). The absolute finest in French cuisine due to his well-known philosophy of using local home-grown cuisine with the freshest ingredients (a very French concept - you see this quite a bit in Paris). His menu changew day-to-day dependent upon fresh market pickings. I find it funny that they persist in including the "Pigall" appellation as anyone familiar with Paris would automatically conjure up images of prostitutes in the seedy area surrounding Pigalle near Montmartre! But the prior resto was called Pigall's and it was a long-term well-known place in Cincy; tradition dies hard in this conservative enclave. I offer my congratulations to Jean-Robert for his Top Zagat rating as well as his new 4-star Mobil designation. Thank you for bringing several authentic French restaurants to the Queen City! Menu Gourmand for the current sampling of the chef's best (especially when pan-seared foie gras is on the menu)! Priced at $134, wine pairings included, and for $97 sans wine. The 3 course prix-fixe comes in at a reasonable $74. Last night I chose the Menu Gourmand as a birthday celebration and it was trés fantastique! Click HERE to see the amuse bouches, HERE to see the main courses, and HERE for the desserts! When calling ahead to make reservations, if you call before the new season's menu appears, you'll be asked what your food preferences are - cool! I told them I'd love the pan-seared foie gras, if possible, anything to do with macarons (rose preferably) and no mushrooms (even though that seems to be one of de Caval's favorites). I cannot recommend The Quarter Bistro highly enough to you! Formerly called the Latin Quarter they now bill themselves as the Quarter Bistro in order to continue their tradition of a fully-integrated international menu without being confined to Latin fare (which is now about 20% of the menu). I noticed this restaurant on my way out of the Mariemont Theatre one night (it sits next door) - anyone who knows me knows I am in love with Paris so naturally I had to check out any place billing itself as the Latin Quarter. The food is impeccable here, it's wonderful French- & Latin-influenced fare, the warm chewy baked-fresh French bread, the Mojitos (sort of like the Latin version of a mint julep but with rum - rum, muddled mint leaves, fine sugar & hint of lime - so easy to lose one's "stability" drinking these lovely things). And, of course, the Beatchick was impressed with their great wine selection - after all, how French can it be if there is no fine wine list? The décor is modern bistro with black patterned carpet, Gaudi-inspired arches, an infusion of color everywhere. This place is SO wonderful that I recommended it for my friend, Gina's, farewell party - she's from Peru and thought it divine! Our vegan friend, Renée, was equally impressed with her ability to fix up a vegan meal from the choices offered on the menu. Even our self-described hillbilly friend, Greg, who is very particular in his tastes, was happy with the food & the décor!
Everything but do try the French bread in a bag! The mojitos are a must! And the Quarter (field greens) salads are FABOO!! UPDATE 9/20/04: Returned last night & tried some of the new fare: *(incl. w/entrée) Quarter Salad with golden raisins, almond slivers - YUMMY *($25) Lobster risotto with big chunks of lobster (smidgen fishy but delish), a plethora of asparagus, fresh parmesan shavings - DIVINE *($6) Passionfruit Crème Brûlée - the Passionfruit was too subtle to compete with the smoky caramel crust/glaze; perhaps if the dish had been deeper it would have worked. My server mentioned a Cherry Amaretto Crème Brûlée which would have carried the flavors well. Also, the custard was too creamy - more of the consistency of instant pudding. To me a crème brûlée's custard should be a bit more dense, with a bit more egg taste to it. Better stick with the Key Lime Pie (which looked magnifique, BTW)! *($6) Mojito *($4.50) Espresso The general manager, Adam Kleshinski, is very proud of the new menu offerings stating that there are price points to please all tastes & budgets; I would have to agree! The Closed Doors of the Maisonette on 6th by BeatChick, 1 more photos Maisonette EFFECTIVE JULY 25TH, 2005 THE MAISONETTE HAS CLOSED IT'S DOORS I'm extremely saddened by this news as I considered the Maisonette to be one of the top restaurants in the world but I am happy that I was able to dine there last November. Below is my original review: My first visit to this venerable restaurant (11/11/04). Stan was my waiter, Tom was the maître d'. This is not one of those restaurants where they say "Hi, my name is ..., and I'll be your waiter tonight". I just asked for the names. ;) The service was excellent without being obsequious. As I had arrived early, Stan took the time to show me the various paintings around the restaurant. One was a Duveneck (local artist) painting; he'd substituted a male for his model because he couldn't get his regular model (like the boy in his painting "whistling"/holding cig at the Cincinnati Art Museum) - Stan quipped it was their very own drag queen! ;) Decor: rosewood, rose & burgundy tones warmed with cream & gold. 3 chandeliers in the main area. one little circular-style demi-room that would seat 4-8 people - dishes have a rosewood border that mimicked the rosewood - silver has the signature Maisonette M engraved on it - looked antique - one of the engraved Ms was almost gone - I love the aged nature of the silverware - wow. They received their 41st consecutive 5-star Mobil rating 2 days ago (for 2005) - Mobil rates US restaurants, while Michelin rates Europe. The Maisonette is the only restaurant in North America that has retained its 5-star rating for so long. No other restaurant in North America matches its long-standing reputation. Beautiful paintings throughout done by local artists with local models - one model, a redhead, is in 3 paintings. Upstairs are the bathrooms mesdames et messieurs and there are also conference rooms, one named the Versailles room but they were locked (YES, I tried!) Great review!
It was all fantastic but my absolute fave is the Chocolate soufflé with pitcher of bittersweet sauce accompanied by raspberries. Mmmmm Boeuf Bourguignon The beef was mostly good but 2 pieces were a little fatty & tough, however, the rest of it was perfect. It did not surpass the best boeuf bourguignon I'd ever had at Le Vieux Bistro in Paris. The bourguignon was served with whipped potatoes (perfect) and steamed veggies (subLIME! green beans-the French haricots vert, yellow wax beans, matchstick carrots & red pepper - perfectly crisp yet tender). Chocolate soufflé This was served with a bittersweet chocolate sauce & plump little perfect raspberries that Tom brought later on - divine. This was accompanied by a double shot of espresso - perfect just like in France. I had asked about eau de vie but they no longer carry those, too difficult to get - basically too hard to get in Ohio period. They do, however, have Armagnac, which I'd love to try my next trip, and aged Port. Along with the check is brought a triple-tiered little silver tray of baby cookies: chocolate cookie with raspberry center, raspberry cookie with a raspberry center, one was a little meringue 1/2 of it dipped in chocolate and 3 others that I didn't try but one looked like a macaroon. Reminded me of my afternoon tea experience at the Ritz in Paris. Silverglade's is a great store/deli downtown. They stock up on specialty items (gourmet potato chips, meringue puffs, Pepperidge Farm cookies). They recently moved to their new location on 8th & Sycamore from their old location on 4th & Plum, so they'll no longer be catering to the 4h & Plum apartment clientele. During the day they serve hot dinners out of the deli until about 5pm for $5 + under. They also have 2 great soup offerings for the day - get the chicken rice soup if they have it; the bean & ham is excellent, too. Get there early for the dinners as that's when they are the best. Many of my co-workers think they have the best chicken salad in Cincinnati and it IS fab, but one of my favorite things to get there are the salami/cream cheese rollups. And when I miss Paris I pop in here to get an Orangina. They also have a full wine selection & cappuccino bar. I'm not sure if he's the manager or not but I like to flirt with the cute guy with black hair & blue eyes. UPDATE 9/17/05: We popped in this past Saturday to the Silverglades at Findlay Market & discovered the LARGEST selection of cheeses & olives in Cincinnati! Picked up some Kirsch gourmandise for a friend, some Port Salut & other cheese for us. Quite a thrilling discovery!

If the mood for pizza strikes you after an arty film in Mariemont then by all means try out Mio's, one of the best little pizzerias in town. The fare is more authentic than most pizza joints in town - you will not be remiss in going here! My dear, good friend, MadAboutParis, says one MUST try the pizza with sesame seeds on the crust!
Well, just try out your favorite! There's even a kids' menu for the younguns! Dewey's Pizza - Oakley Square by BeatChick Forget those other hometown pizza places in Cincy that claim to be the best: La Rosa's (sauce is too sweet, service is too terrible), Donato's (a Dayton chain, excellent pizza but service is hit-or-miss). Dewey's Pizza is the REAL DEAL specializing in hand-tossed, stone-baked gourmet, but not frou-frou, pizzas. Adults can choose from among such grownup toppings as roasted red peppers, goat cheese, artichokes, kalamata olives while the kids will be satisfied with such staples as pepperoni & cheese (X-Pepperoni)! The kids will also be enthralled by watching them making & tossing the pizza behind the large window. Excellent wine & beer choices are available along with a superb selection of salads. For those tiring of pizza (gasp!), calzones are available. Caveat: artichokes are the leaves not the hearts - one manager says he just throws the hearts away! So specifically ask for artichoke HEARTS. Best location is still the original on Oakley Square (not too far from Hyde Park)! Locations: Oakley, Clifton-on-Ludlow, Newport on the Levy, Harper’s Point

Dilly Deli Wine Shop by BeatChick This is a great wine bar/store located in Mariemont, an quaint enclave in Cincinnati - the area tends to be rather conservative & stodgy but the architecture in the area is lovely & makes for a fine evening stroll. Dilly Deli has a fab selection of wines, they bill themselves as the "Casual Approach to 'Serious Wines'" so check it out! This is a popular place and they've been voted Best Courtyard Dining, Best Deli, & Best Carryout (Runner Up) in Cincinnati Magazine. They have wonderful live music on the weekends! Last time I was there the place was filled up with families with children to listen to the folk guitar music - a nice, calm ambience & experience!! A warm place to while away a wintry evening. Highland Coffee House by BeatChick Highland Coffee House is my favorite coffee house in Cincinnati because it's a true bohemian urban experience & there is no pretension to be found here. In the autumn or spring, the terrace out back is a great place to read a great book & drink your coffee. The proprietor is a great guy! He always welcomes me with a smile on his face and always seems to recognize & "know" me even if it's been a year since I last showed up. One night my friend Chris & I popped in at 2am, discovered he had already closed but he gladly made us a cup of coffee anyway! Awesome!
Everything is great - I've never been disappointed! Photo: January 2005 Leave a Comment

Sitwell's Coffeehouse - Clifton Gsalight District by BeatChick Located in the Clifton-on-Ludlow area (or otherwise known as the Clifton Gaslight District) of Cincy (next to the art-film Esquire Theatre), an area associated with the UC college student scene, to me one of the coolest downbeat areas of the city, a funky/eclectic part of town. Sitwell's Coffeehouse holds an eclectic jumble of hand-painted tables & chairs. Smoking & non-smoking sections. Poetry readings. Very arty place. Ambience is calm during the day, good place to read the paper or your fave poetry (you'll see poetry hand-painted along the ceiling), but is much livelier on the weekend nights when local artists play. Excellent range of coffee varieties. Staff is overworked and can be slow to take your order but are quick to bring it to you; and they are very nice. Owner is a little strange - jumpy/antsy, tends to be flirty with men, yet dismissive of women customers; barks out rude orders to her staff (SO TIP THE STAFF WELL!). When I asked to take a pic of her (she has the lovely deep-set eyes like Dame Edith Sitwell) she demurred so I took a photo of the interior instead. Internet service; charges by the minute.

If you happen to find yourself in the Madeira (that stodgy teacher section of Cincinnati where the Indian Hill wannabes live)on Indian Hill sections of Cincinnati, do yourself a favor & make the trek to Ferrari's Little Italy & Bakery, another great little Italian resto of note in Cincy.
