Bonbonerie's Tea Room - terrace seating by BeatChick, 4 more photos Had afternoon tea at the Bonbonerie again yesterday (Aug '05) with madaboutparis. I enjoy taking photos of this place; once before I was out taking photos & I couldn't resist a hot, steaming small pot of their jasmine white tea - mmmm. It's very light & delicate & requires no sweetening although you may add honey if you wish. Yesterday I tried their Afternoon Tea (reservations required) with it's 3-tiered assortment of sandwiches (cucumber & pimiento cheese), quiche (asparagus), fruit & desserts - yummy. The décor explodes in a wonderful assortment of mis-matched platters, plates, cups & saucers with charming paintings on the walls, shelfs full of brightly-colored teapots & the same teapots hanging from the ceiling - all evoking the memory of my dear-departed grandmother, Nanny! The trip before (Jan '05) I tried the Quiche du Jour (asparagus - $7.50), set on a bed of field greens served with a medley of julienned carrots, sliced cucumbers & radishes & dried cranberries with their wonderful vinaigrette, all accompanied by a demi-cup of fresh fruit plus two cute little tea cookies. Soup du jour was tomato & chicken noodle but I did not partake. If you're not a fan of tea they have a wide selection of fountain sodas (great for the kids!) As usual I saw lots of moms with their kids having an afternoon snack, groups of friends having a high old time, one group was celebrating a birthday and ONE gentleman had braved his way in to buy an assortment of teas & to buy a teapot (presumably for his lady love?) Yesterday we were witness to a Birthday Tea Party (see photo)! What an excellent idea for young ladies! Click HERE to see description of the bakery & to view photos of the pastries & sandwiches.

This a fabulously authentic 1950s-style drive-in diner type of place serving American staples such as hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, of course the Root Beer Float! This is a great place to take the kids & a perfect place to indulge in your nostalgia for Americana. Also a great place for a first date! No pressure! Closed in the wintertime - so sorry! Open April - September

Just 2 minutes down the road from me in conservative West Chester is the very cozy, warm traditional American restaurant, The White House Inn, set in a 1950s farmhouse. In the bar area is a huge fireplace & flagged stones on the floor. There are seven separate dining areas each with a different feel; the waitress will have no problem sitting you in an area you've never dined in before. A great place to hold your wedding, they have a lovely gazebo out back. You may reserve one of the dining areas specifically for your wedding party to prepare before & for the reception afterwards.

Toby's Deli a great deli located in a tiny little space in a corner of the Cincinnati Enquirer Building. Everyone LOVES this place & it's always crowded at lunchtime with people lined out the door to get their favorite sandwiches, salads & soups. I like to either go late in the afternoon after the crowds are gone (but by then the soups are usually GONE) or I go in around 11am to order my sandwich to go. They have the most wonderfully fresh chicken salad with nothing extra added to it (like onions - errgh) - I'm VERY picky about chicken salad & this is one of 3 places I'll buy it in Cincinnati. In fact, it is THE BEST CHICKEN SALAD in Cincinnati! I'm so partial to it that in 3 years of frequenting this place I've yet to try any of their other sandwiches! If you're partial to tomatoes like I am, get them; they are so fresh & so ripe & red!! Try their popular $4.50 Daily Special: 1) 1/2 Sandwich & a Bowl of Soup 2) Small Tossed Salad & a Bowl of Soup 3) 1/2 Sandwich & Small Tossed Salad Toby's stays open most weeknights 'til 8pm. Pop in sometime, grab a sandwich, say hello to Toby & Will for me. They are some of the nicest people in town & will wow you with that great midwestern warmth & hospitality. Toby, the owner, will steer you to some of the best places in Cincinnati & give you some great history of the city as well. Tell 'em Beatchick from Virtual Tourist sent you!!
The Chicken Salad Plate - it's what I call the chicken salad SALAD - it's a mound of their faboo signature plain but fresh chunky chicken salad on a bed of greens & veggies - mmmm. I ask for extra cucumber in mine. It's divine with their bleu cheese dressing. Chicken Salad Sandwich on light or dark rye bread. Chicken Wild Rice Soup - thick, creamy, perfect! - $2.50 Leave a Comment Theme: DeliPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 312 Elm St Lobby, Cincinnati, OH 45202Phone: 513-721-1409Directions: From I-75 take 2nd st exit-turn left on Elm St- park in the Enquirer parking garage (hint: if you park 'til past 11pm the attendant will be gone - you can push a button where you can "pay" and be let out - but if you don't pay they can't find you)Website: http://www.citybeat.com/gbase/restaurant/RestaurantListing?restaurant=Toby%27s+Deli

Mmmmmn! Pizza Tower, yummy pizza! by kdoc13 The best pizza in the midwest is in Dayton Ohio at a place called the flying pizza. But a close runner up is Cincinnati's Pizza Tower. Many times my friends and I have made the hour long trek south from Dayton to wind up at the Pizza Tower to enjoy a slice of heaven! It is partially owned by Hall of Fame Football Player Anthony Munoz, of the Cincinnati Bengals, and is worth driving to its single location in Mason There is a wide variety of things to choose on the menu. Calzones, Pasta, Sanwiches, and of course Pizza are all to be had, along with really great appetizers like baked ravioli, and incredibly good garlic bread with cheese! The pizza is the real star though. Homemade dough, designed to work with their own pizza sauce and a ton of toppings to choose from that range from Atrichokes to White Cheese and everything in between. The atmosphere is family friendly, including a childrens area where family friendly shows or movies constantly play. True to the nature of Cincinnati, there is also a smoking section. And true to Cincinnati, it is at the top of the restaurant where the smokers may look down on everyone else. But if you are a non-smoker, it is far enough away that it doesn't affect you.
My favorite pizza is this.... Pepperoni Sausage Cheddar Cheese Feta Cheese Meatballs and a lot of Parmesian Cheese and red pepper (added from the shakers on the table.) There are also a lot of vegetarian choices for those who don't do meat, including toppings, or salads. Dinner with Sichuan Asparagus, Mango Iced Tea by BeatChick, 4 more photos P.F. Chang's is a national chain but it doesn't feel like one! One of my favorite places for Chinese-influenced food (and who could resist the word Bistro) in Cincy. If you stick to either an appetizer or 1 entrée you'll find that it's very filling and very inexpensive. Usually I go with the Chicken Lettuce Wraps ($6.75) and the Sichuan-style asparagus ($5.95) and take the leftovers home. The brown rice is always fluffy & non-sticky. Lots of great vegetarian offerings on the menu. My friend, Renée, who is vegan, usually opts for the Lettuce wraps with tofu; she finds the chef & staff here to be very accommodating. House drinks are wonderful here and look very tropical with fruit & umbrellas. They can make the meal pricey, though. Fortunately, the bar is also a great place for people to meet after work & that may be all you're interested in are the drinks. My especial favorite is the PLUM WINE - mmmm. The décor could be described as Chinese Art Deco and is very modern, funky & cool. Staff is always nice & friendly. UPDATE: Tonight I met the wonderful trés cool, way cool server, Nick! He is a national trainer for P. F. Chang's & I can certainly see why! He is very knowledgeable about the P. F. Chang concept & history, he's extremely professional & an expert at what he does!! The location in West Chester (just north of Cincy) has terrace seating.

El Rancho Grande - Enchiladas Verdes takeout by BeatChick, 4 more photos My favorite Mexican restaurant in Cincinnati. I'm a stickler about Mexican food. I grew up in California where you will find many FABULOUS authentic Mexican restaurants. When I was 5, one of the ladies at our church, she was from Mexico, brought in a tray of enchiladas and I instantly fell in love. Enchiladas have been my staunch favorite since (yep, even above a good steak I'd rather a good enchilada - sheer heresy, I know!) So I've been hard pressed to find a good Mexican restaurant but THIS place passes muster! And it's cheap, you can get the Speedy Gonzalez lunch for less then $5 - not a bad deal - and it comes with chips & their made-on-the-premises salsa. 3 Locations: Sharonville West Chester Middletown
Enchiladas Verdes Actually, all the enchilada dishes are superb! Lulu's Noodle Bar - Cincinnati by BeatChick http://www.cincinnati.com/freetime/dining/reviews/012800_lulus.html Owner: Alex Chin, owner of Pacific Moon & Shanghai Mama Voted by AOL Cityguide as one of the best takeout places in Cincy. Read the review here. Their Broccoli Chicken is the best I've ever tasted: light sauce, perfectly tender chicken, crisp-tender vibrantly green broccoli & deeply colored orange carrots, crunchy water chestnuts. Very simple - perfect. They have a wonderful, cheap Lunch Menu. I had a Japanese boss who told me about Lulu's. He loved their noodle bowls & said it was one of the best Asian restaurants in Cincinnati! And he had very finicky tastes. You may specifiy the level of spicyness of your meal & they will accommodate. Hours: Monday - Thursday 11:00am - 9:30pm Friday & Saturday 11:00am - 10:00pm Dining room closes 30 minutes before closing time; carryout orders available until closing times.

A most congenial, romantic restaurant, I ate lunch at the Glendale Gaslight Café, a name that invokes the image of its neighborhood, a few years ago after a job interview. They made me feel very special indeed as if I were already celebrating my new job. Located in an out-of-the-way part of the charming, historic Glendale neighborhood of Cincinnati, you'll be surprised at how inexpensive this restaurant is considering its setting in an old Victorian home with its tavern feel. Be sure to dine in on Tuesday nights when they have LOBSTER! When you're finished dining here, you may wish to shop across the street at Bella Donna, one of the few places that sells Icon shoes & handbags, or to continue the historic feel, you can visit historic Oak Hill Cemetery just down the street with its beautiful statuary & mausoleums.

I've never eaten inside the inn but we have used the Iron Horse Inn (so-called because of the building's proximity to the railroad tracks where "iron horses" still rumble past to this day) to cater our office Christmas party and it was a resounding success. I was rather nervous because it was my first time conducting a catering affair but the professional caterer on staff handled everything thoroughly & led me through the steps to create a successful party. Set in charming, Victorian, gaslit Glendale, the Iron Horse Inn has won Awards of Excellence for its Blue Corn Tortilla (Best Vegetarian Entree) and an Award of Merit its for its Sorbet (Best Dessert Category). The restored, historic white, square Victorian-era tavern, just 2 miles west of I-75, is over a century old and is a Nationally recognized historic building. They also do Sunday Brunch. Live Jazz is on tap Friday & Saturday evenings starting at 7:30pm.
