Copeland's Restaurant by Stephen-KarenConn When Karen and I decided to meet for the first time, after we had been chatting for a few days on the internet, she suggested we meet for dinner at Copeland's. I'll never forget the fateful night, March 28, 2001. Copeland's is an upscale but casual restaurant with a full American menu, and a speciality in New Orleans style Cajun dishes. In fact, Copeland's flagship restaurant in New Orleans has been voted "Best Cajun Restaurant," for eight years by New Orleans Magazine. Normally a first blind date would just be for a drink, or lunch. However, it must have been in the stars that this was to be a magical evening. We hit it off from the start (unlike many other first dates we had both had), and after dinner we went across the street to the lobby of the Marriott where we sat and continued talking until late into the night. Within a short period of time we were seeing each other exculsively. Exactly one year and two days later, we became husband and wife. Oh HaPpY Day!!!
On our first date we both ordered Catfish Acadiana, golden fried bayou catfish with creamy shrimp butter sauce, steamed vegetables, and spicey red potatoes. Although I was totally enchanted by Karen, and she apparently found me at least amusing, it was not exactly love at first sight - just keen interest - so we both enjoyed the food. We have been back there many times, as recently as last Sunday, and I almost always order the Catfish Acadiana. Not only is it terrific, but at $12.99 it is also one of the least expensive items on the menu. You won't have room for desert, but if you decide to go for it anyway, you won't go wrong by trying the Brownie Deluxe A LaMode. by BeatChick For my 30th birthday, Mr. Connolly wowed me with dinner at Jeff Ruby's first location, The Precinct. It was even written up in a Vogue article about the best steakhouses in America (to my recollection only 8 made the list). Terence Joseph didn't care for the ambience as he felt the tables were too close together so the next one we tried was The Tropicana, located just east of Newport-on-the-Levee across from the Hofbrau Haus. There the seating is much more loosely arranged, the food is still perfect, and dress code is a bit more relaxed with Terry feeling comfortable wearing a nice shirt and jeans (nary an eye blinked). Took my mom to The Tropicana this past May and she said it was one of the two best dining experiences she'd ever had! Just a few days later Jeff Ruby made the news when he ousted O.J. Simpson from another of his restaurants! Mr. Simpson claimed it was due to racism but Mr. Ruby averred that he'd served and greeted O.J. many times but felt that the book O.J. had just written was too disrespectful, so out he went. Needless to say, my mom regaled her friends back home with the story of her dinner. Go on Tuesday nights when wine is 1/2 price. When Terry & I went we started off with a Black Bean Hummus (which seems to have been replaced with an Edamame Hummus) and a bottle of champagne. We shared a side of big, fat Grilled Asparagus. Terry no doubt chose the "Shorterhouse" as he's a Porterhouse fan (he doesn't do seafood but thought this would be a great place for me since they do surf & turf here). We all 3 opted for the mashed potatoes (mmmm). Many nights you'll find a jazz combo playing in the center of the dining room. My dear departed friend's (Sandye Utley) amour, Ed, plays here on Wednesdays, I believe.
Why the Steak Collinsworth, naturellement! Both times I selected the Steak Collinsworth, a 9 oz. filet topped with crab, asparagus (apparently, I can't get enough asparagus) enhanced by a bordelaise and bernaise sauce. Basically, this is the Steak Oscar but with a bordelaise added (very rich indeed). My mom opted for this as well. The Tropicana is open M-F from 5pm-10pm and 'til 11pm on Saturday (closed Sundays most likely because it's illegal to serve alcohol on Sundays in KY). The bar, however, stays open 'til 2am W-Sa. Two of my best friends, Mary G, Ebony, and I dined at Jean-Robert at Pigall's for my 40th birthday (which is next weekend but I'll be in Chicago celebrating with Kristi (dabs), Sally (shrimp56) and Katherine (Callavetta). Mary & Ebony opted for the 3-course meal while I celebrated with the menu gourmand. We started off with the amuse bouche of Duck Confit en Papillote, Salmon Rillettes, a bright, sprightly Vicchysoise (with some sort of vegetable included). I started off with a Kir (apparently, this was a complimentary birthday kir because I was never charged for it!), Mary chose their fabulous Cremant du Jura (Pigall's label Tissot) and Ebony opted for the Perrier (she tells me she's a light drunk - ar ar). First Course: Mary G's Fromage de Chèvre Chaud de la région en croûte dorée, cebettes de haricots vert aux amandes (Indiana Warm Goat Cheese in a Golden Crust with Scallions, French Green Beans, Almonds and Currants). Ebony's Duo de homard, flan et salade de légumes printaniers, caviar de Kentucky (Maine Lobster Duo, with Spring Vegetable Salad and Flan with Kentucky Caviar Cream). Apparently, there is a farm in Louisville that creates its own caviar! I had the Salade de Crabe façon gazpacho, sorbet d'algues marines et caviar de Kentucky (Jonah Crab with Kentucky Caviar Cream, Gazpacho Style with Seaweed Sorbet) accompanied by a Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, 2005 (perfectly sweet to complement the crab). Next up was the divine Foie gras chaud au poire, pastèque et cresson, fondue de chanterelles et choux-fleur served with a Kracher Zweigelt Beerenauslee, Burgenland, Austria, 2003. The Kentucky Caviar Cream was poured after the dish was presented - lovely. Photos: September 2007
I totally forgot to take a photo of it but my favorite dish was pan-seared foie gras in a black pepper & sweet wine emulsion accompanied by watermelon & watercress, chanterelle mushrooms (gave those to Ebony who LOVES mushrooms) & cauliflower. I'd fallen in love with pan-seared foie gras when I tasted a bite from my friend Daniel's at Chez Georges in Chartres last year. I was eager to try it here and was not disappointed. Fabuleaux!! No photo of the Jonah Crab, either. The great thing about this restaurant is that you can opt to sit at the bar, sip a bit of wine or your favorite aperitif, and opt for one simple course. I'll be back for the foie gras! My dessert consisted of a Variation de Gourmandises (Variation of Sweets): Key Lime Pie with Blueberries, Lemon-Mint Bavarian with Strawberry Soup (Bavarois au citron-menthe avec une soupe des fraises), Raspberry Mousse with Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce (Mousse a la framboise avec une sauce au chocolat semi-amer), and 2 bites of Crème Brûlée with the proverbial cherry on top, all accompanied by a vibrant glass of Pigall's Label Tissot, Cremant du Jura (at last, I got my glass of sparkling wine)! This is the same Cremant that I rave about at Bistro JeanRo. Mary's delectable choice was the Tartelette au Chocolat au Lait et Noix de Macadamia (Milk Chocolate & Macadamia Truffle Tart with Macadamia Whipped Cream). Ebony opted for the classic crème brûlée (Crème Brûlée à la Vanille accompagnée des fruits frais) which was, as the French say, correct (meaning it was prepared exactly the way it's supposed to be prepared but what else would you expect from Jean-Robert de Caval?). Hers looked so good I had to snap 2 photos!! We were then given a dish of cookies - one was a macadamia nut cookie that resembled a Mexican Wedding Cookie but without the powdered sugar (castor sugar to you English folk) and a chocolate cookie. THEN we were served small bon bons of dark-chocolate-covered coconut candies. They were going to bring out more but we pleaded for mercy as we were BURSTING! Photos: September 2007
Well, I'm a sucker for Key Lime Pie so obviously this was one of my favorites but I can never turn down a good crème brûlée and this one was perfect (ADORED the clever presentation in the spoon)! This must've been a birthday week because I saw at least 2 other desserts with birthday candles being brought out to diners. Per Richard, the maître d', Jean-Robert's birthday is this week also (Wednesday or Thursday) so that makes this talented chef a Virgo! For the main course I was served with the Ombre chevalier, émulsion à la betterave rouge et citron, risotto au fromage de chèvre et basilique (Braised Arctic Char, Beets & Lemon Emulsion, Basil & Goat Cheese Risotto, Compote of Candied Fennel) accompanied by a glass of Domaine Joseph Voillot Bougogne Vieilles Vignes, 2004. This was immediately followed up with Pièce d'agneau au thym et vin rouge, roulade d'aubergine et champignon, mais et merguez, pommes de terres au persil (Lamb Loin with Thyme-Red Wine Sauce, Eggplant Roulade with Mushrooms, Corn & Merguez Sausage) accompanied by a glass of Pierre Gonon Saint Joseph, 2003. Mary loved the Saint-Jacques à la sauce aux truffes, Risotto de légumes de printemps (Sea Scallops with Light Truffle Sauce, Risotto of Spring Vegetables, Mushroom Duxelle). Ebony was wowed by her Aiguillettes de canard au miel et mûres, polenta légère au roquefort, gratin de blettes et cèpes (Duck Breast with Peppery Honey, Blackberry Compote, Polenta with Roquefort & Vidalia Onion, Gratin of Swiss Chard & Cèpes). With more mushrooms she was in heaven! Photos: September 2007
I fell in love with both my dishes and the wine selections were SUPERB perfectly complementing each course. BTW, the service here was EXCELLENT! Our server was Emily, who looks just like a younger Virginia Madsen with straight blonde hair, is pregnant and due in November. Not once did she ever show any signs of her energy flagging (bless her heart). She was kind, warm, funny, and spoiled us rotten. Rock Bottom Cafe and Brewery by Stephen-KarenConn Rock Bottom is top drawer with us. The restaurant has an upscale feel and is in a festive setting at Fountain Square - the very heart of Cincinnati. They are open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner, but we have only done lunch there. If the weather is nice and you eat outside you will enjoy a wonderful view of the splashing fountain, and you may even attract some pigeons to share your crumbs.
We love their brick-oven pizza, and the homemade bread has been voted "Best of Cincinnati." People say the beer is passable, but I've never tried it. I hate the taste of beer. The iced tea and diet cola are sublime, especially on a warm summer day. Buca di Beppo Restaurant by Stephen-KarenConn After the hostess greets you at Buca di Beppo, you will be taken through the kitchen, filled with savory aromas, and into one of ten dining rooms. The walls are almost totally covered with photos, posters, record albums and other items of Italiana - 5-000 of them. That with the colored lights and upbeat staff soon puts everyone into a festive mood. Your server arrives at your table and encourages everyone to feel free to get up and look around, be loud, be obnoxious, wild, and crazy. And that was even before the wine was served. When the food comes out it is heaped on platters, family style, and everyone is encouraged to share. This is no place to grab a quick bite. It's a wonderful venue for a party - large or small. We enjoyed our anniversary celebration here on one occasion and a birthday on another. The staff will even come to your table and sing for you.
The last time we ate at Buca di Beppo it was with a group of twelve people around a big table. Because of the family style service, we must have sampled at least a half dozen different dishes -all very good. I especially enjoyed the Chicken Marsala with fresh mushrooms. The Italian sausage was also a favorite. Skyline's Signature Dish - the Three Way by Stephen-KarenConn When I was living in Tennessee and my son, Chris, came to Cincinnati to attend the University, he called home raving about Skyline Chili. So when I went to visit him I insisted that he take me to Skyline for a meal. It was not at all like I expected; it was much better. Skyline first opened in Cincinnati in 1949, and was named for the view from the original location. The proprieter was Nicholas Lambrinides, an immigrant from Kastoria, Greece, who was fulfilling his dream of coming to America and opening a restaurant. Nicholas used family recipe handed down to him from his mother and grandmother back in the Old World. People loved Skyline Chili and the dish gained an almost cult-like following. The enterprise has grown until today there are dozens of Cincinnati area restaurants serving the recipe that has become known throughout America as Cincinnati-style chili.
Nothing at all like Texas Chili, Skyline Chili is a spicy but mild meaty sauce, poured on a plate of spaghetti, and topped with huge mounds of shreaded mild cheddar cheeze. That's the three way. You can also have the four way (add onions OR red beans), or the five way (add onions AND red beans). It is served with oyster crackers. Skyline is also famous for their Coney dogs, also piled high with chili and cheeze. Just before writing this tip I went to our neighborhood Skyline Chili for lunch and took this picture before I ate. Now I'm going to email this page to my son,Chris, who now lives in Denver, CO. It will make him so homesick and hungry. Every time he returns to Cincinnati, we head for Skyline Chili. Rookwood Pottery Restaurant by Stephen-KarenConn Rookwood Pottery was first made in Cincinnati in 1880, and was manufactured in this beautiful historic tudor-style building atop Mt. Adams from 1892 - 1961. That's when the pottery business was moved elsewhere, and the old red brick kilns were made into three dining rooms for this popular Cincinnati Restaurant. Regretably, there is no view from inside the restaurant, but some say that the view from the parking lot is the best in the city. It is absolutely dazzling to stand beside the restaurant after dark and look down on the lights of Cincinnati. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, and reflects the historic significance of the building.
The seafood fettuccini is sumptous, and the thick juicy burgers are great too. Be sure to leave room for the chocolate fudge cake. Through the Garden is a vegitarian place. Sort of. There are some non-veggie items, but mostly it is a little place where you get really good salads. I am a meat and potatos guy, but this is normally where I go with the ladies from work who are on a diet. Not bad food. But not my style, your milage may vary.
