'BeatChick' strikes again. Read her tip about this place, it sent me there and I was quite satisfied. Had some great ribs at this little shack in Over The Rhine. I've been coming to Cincinnati on and off for about a year, and apparently didn't try very hard to find good coffee - settled for Starbucks. This trip I ventured out and found two local coffee shops, complete with baristas with body alterations - just as it should be!
Lookout Joe's had the best coffee - or I should say espresso drink. My drink of choice is non-fat latte, and Lookout Joe's made it right. The milk was properly steamed, and to flavor of the beans was not burnt. I'm a happy girl! You can't leave town without trying some excellent Cincinnati-style chili. Here it's used as more of a topping, and you can get it on spaghetti, hot dogs, burritos, etc... And the special ingredients (they differ from place to place but revolve around chocolate and cinnamon) give it a flavor that put all other chilis to shame. Skyline and Gold Star are the major chains around town. Camp Washington, northwest of downtown, is a local institution. I have yet to try the latter two but will definitely sample them next time I'm in town. I've heard that Camp Washington chili is the greatest chili in the entire world.
Everything, just pile it on. A friend of the family introduced us to Cincinnati-style chili when I was younger and I've been hooked ever since. This little roadside place has been operating in this location since 1957. They make their own Root Beer on-site, and boy is it GOOD!
No matter what else you order, get a Root Beer Float to go along with it. Formerly known as Hamburger Mary's, this is one of my FAVORITE places in town! Located near the Hamilton Co. library downtown, they serve THE best cheeseburgers (they are wonderfully charbroiled) in all of Cincy, trust me. AND they are a gay-friendly place. My friend, John, mentions that most are gay-owned, which makes for a fun, frothy visit! HM's is a chain resto originally started in San Francisco, and this place merely changed it's name but has the feel of the former. You'll find the place to be wonderfully kitschy & eclectic while the staff is warm & welcoming. Joan is an eccentric character who's dress ranges from stylish & chic to natty, who will always ensure that your dining experience is memorable. My dear departed friend, Sandye, and I LOVED this place. It became a tradition for us to dine here & sip their $3 glasses of excellent champagne before our visits to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Connolly joined me here before our jaunt to see the VIOLENT FEMMES at McFadden's last July and he agreed that the ambience was very cool. Sign up for the newsletter & you'll get promotional coupons for reduced dinners & drinks (yee-haw!). UPDATE 9/20/05: Sandye & I came here Friday night before the opening of the symphony to celebrate my b-day! Naturally, good times were had by all, much champagne was imbibed & she gifted me with a signed copy of Nigel Kennedy's "The Kennedy Experience" CD which covers Hendrix songs using a jazz violin ensemble - too, too cool! Thanks, Sandye!

This little place was recommended to us, so we stopped by to try their Great Gyros!
The Classic Gyros are delicious, the best Greek foods I've so far found in the Cincy Metro area. You can order extra Feta or Olives! They also have Greek Salads, Spanakopita, Tiropita, Dolmathes and several 'sweets' available. Thank you Mary!! (Beatchick) You've saved me! Just when I thought all hope was lost in finding some decent Pizza in Cincinnati (see previous Pizza tip) , you direct me to Deweys!
Here I found real thin crust pizza, that is baked in the oven to a crispy perfection. They actually use spices here, especially garlic! I had a combo pizza; half with peperoni and half with Roma tomatoes... delicious stuff. I also tried the house salad, which has pine nuts and goat cheese in it..... 2 of my favorite salad ingredients! Deweys, I'll certainly be back!
