The Cincinnati Art Museum is one of the oldest art museums in the United States. Founded in 1881, it was the first purpose-built art museum west of the Alleghenies. Its collection of over 60,000 works make it one of the most comprehensive collections in the Midwest. This is a quaint little museum which has artifacts from Egypt, Istanbul, India and other countries. In 2009, the Art Museum made all special exhibitions free admission and instated a $4 parking fee.
We especially liked the car display upfront. The Morgan Motor Company of Malvern, England, has been hand building special order, wooden-framed vehicles since 1910. Introduced in 2001, the Aero 8 is Morgan’s first new design since 1968. Its curved fenders, elongated hood and horse shoe-shaped front grill pay homage to historical car design, while the car’s low body, neatly tapered tail and high-tech interior are contemporary in style. The use of computer-aided design systems and new metal alloys create a smooth mix of old and new in the car’s aesthetics and mechanics. We also liked the Buddha hall, it was a first for us to see a bust that showed Buddha sporting a Mustache! (See the pics)
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Closed Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM) is not a huge museum but it is a good one. You won't find multiple paintings by famous artists, you'll mostly find one: i.e. Monet, Renoir, Degas, Marc Chagall, but you'll find several Modiglianis! There are two Picassos, one Grant Wood & two by Joan Miró (but currently these are not on display). Click HERE to view my CAM travelogue that features the European artists listed above along with some commentary (with my special favorite, our Van Gogh).
Featured at CAM is Cincinnati's own Rookwood Pottery (read
NYTimes article) which was developed in the 1870s by Maria Nichols Storer who founded Rookwood. Christine Girello wrote another fascinating article that you may read about HERE.
You'll also find a fabulous collection of Asian & Middle Eastern artwork, the latter specifically dealing in works from Iran & Iraq.
Being 1/4 Oglala Sioux (the same tribe as Crazy Horse), one of my obsessions concerns Native American culture & art. CAM has a great collection of Native American art done by two leading painters of Native Americans, Henry Farney (French) & Joseph Henry Sharp, both of whom had studios in Cincinnati.
Great features of the website is the Museum Collection feature (so you can see those mentioned above along with the Van Gogh, plus Mary Cassatt and Frank Duveneck - local Cincy artist, etc.) and the postcard collections, which changes from time to time.
General Admission is FREE!

Founded in 1881 and opened its doors in 1886, the museum houses 88 galleries with over 80,000 works of art. Spanning 6,000 years of world art, visitors sample works from Egypt, Greece, Rome, Africa, and the Americas. There is a spectacular display of Nabataean art...which is the only one outside of Jordan! The museum is particularly proud of its Herbert Greer French collection of old master prints and its fine array of European and American portrait miniatures.

The museum of art is simply wonderful. It has a large and diverse collection in a wonderful setting. Admission is free except for occasional special exhibits. It is a warm dry place on a cold wet day and a cool inviting place on a hot summer day.

The quality of the Cincinnati Art Museum is evidenced by the fact that it was recently ranked # 1 by Parenting Magazine. The museum was founded in 1881 and built in 1886, with many new wings being added over the years to house the 80 galleries. In addition to an outstanding permanent collection of art, the museum also hosts numerous special exhibitions throughout the year. Click on the web link below to learn of current special touring exhibitions.
