Science can be fun...
Well, I used to work and volunteer here for five years, so I've got an awesome tip for ya. ;)
The GLSC is open 9:30am to 5:30pm. There are three dining facilities on site, with varying hours. Wheelchair rental is available; strollers are not available. There's an information desk in the main lobby. At the desk, you can find brochures, demonstration schedules, and a musuem map. I suggest taking them with you! There is an attatched parking garage as well; MAKE SURE that you validate your stub at the info desk before you leave! Expect to stay a few hours to see everything. The museum is NOT a place just for kids. It's great for a the solo curious traveller, family, group, couple, etc. The galleries range from the Great Lakes/ecossytem, medicine/biology, technology, physics, weather, and more. The exhibits are very interactive, and many are wheelchair accessible. The demonstrations: They are one of the best features of the museum and they're free to attend. All demos are 1/2 an hour in length, and occur in several locations throughout the musuem. They're interactive, and are not just for kids! Otherwise, there's over 25 demos, and each day there's a new schedule of shows at various times. The museum is very interactive, with over 350 hands on exhibits, spanning three floors. Staff and volunteers cruise the floors, staff interactive exhibits, and have activity/demo carts on the floor at random times. There is also an additional gallery that features travelling exhibitions, which occasionally comes with an additional admission charge. Photography is permitted. Enjoy! :)
As for the Omnimax films: they can be scary for young children, mostly because of the noise. Otherwise, the films are fun & educational, even if the plots are not always superb. The films last approximately 45-50 minutes. Get in line 15 min early, at the least, for your film. The schedule rotates daily, and you'll have to check the site or call for showtimes if you need to plan ahead.

Great Lakes Science Center
Fun place to take the kids (or for the kid in all of us). Tons of hands on things to do, IMAX films and great learning activities. Even though I was 26 yrs old when I went there (with no kids), had a great time playing with all the exibits.
Be sure to catch an IMAX film for more enjoyment.
