  • Home of the Columbus Crew Soccer team. It is a good place to see a soccer game here in Columbus. They are called America's Hardest Working Team. If you like sports - this is the place.

    Ohio State Football Buckeyes

  • If you like college football, a must see on your short list has to be Ohio State football on a fall Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. A newly renovated stadium that holds 106,000 fans( mostly dressed in Scarlet and Gray) is the ticket for a day you will talk about for years to come. One can be more interested in people watching, and talk about it for years to come!

Boasting arguably the World's largest tailgate party, one can choose from a variety of venues, from numerous Buffets, the elegant, to walking around sampling of a wide array of street vendors.

The season starts in late August, consisting of 6 or 7 home games, all building to the final game of the year with the University of Michigan(Maize and Blue). It is held every other year in Columbus. In 2004 the Buckeyes will entertain the U of M in Columbus. Many years the Big Ten Championship is decided on a cold, chilly 3rd week of November. The games in August, and September are generally in the 70's.

TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band in the Land), an all Brass Band, with silver horns is a must see. They warm up in St. John Arena(numerous trophies) just north of the 'Horseshoe'. They usually perfrom 'Script Ohio' either before, halftime, or after the game.
Many websites are devoted to OSU Football, and the world renowned University. The Basketball and Hockey Buckeyes play in The Scottenstein Center, just across the Olentangy River at Champions Lane. And with the new Jack Nicklaus Museum, The new Jesse Owens Track and Field Center, the new Bill Evans Baseball stadium, and the must see Woody Hayes Athletic Center (indoor football facility with numerous trophies).
All are less than a 15 minute walk to see some of the richest tradition in College Atlhetics.

Tickets may be purchased from a number of online ticket agencies in Columbus, Ohio. You may buy tickets just before the game from a scalper, but the best prices are just after kickoff, and you will have missed TBDBITL perform march out of the tunnel, and down the field playing "Buckeye Battle Cry" .

Depending on where your seats are, weather may or may not affect you. From Luxury boxes to a cold November day to 80 degrees in the sun, one should pack everything when travelling in Ohio during the fall months.

Ohio State University football is very popular here. The campus is located north of the central business district.

Blue Jacket's Hockey palace - a beautiful (thankfully privately funded) arena located in the downtown area. The arena also provides a location for concerts in the off-hockey season. There are lots of restaurants and bars in this area, as well as some new residential housing.

    OSU football

Let's face it, we all love buckeye football (don't smirk, I know you have an inner nut), but the prices for a football game are ridiculous! (not to mention kind of difficult to get a hold of), but I have a solution if you can't make it to a real game.

The atmosphere is fun, feeling almost like a real game.

It's called the OSU Spring game, and it is a scrimmage, but all the same still pretty fun. And with ticket prices at 4$ a person you can take the whole family! If the kids get antsy you don't have to feel guilty about leaving, and it can be a seriously fun family event.

    Sunscreen/hat
    poncho (weather dependent)
possibly a butt pillow, the seats can be hard
cash for drinks (although you can get a free cup of water if you ask specifically for it)

Nationwide Arena is the home of the Blue Jackets, an NHL franchise. This is a great place to watch hockey. I was very impressed with the arena and how well the seating area was structured in relation to the ice. I also liked the hallways and the open spaces outside of the seating area. If you have a chance to see a game here, definitely do it.

The fans are great, and the product on the ice is getting better every year. Rick Nash and Nikolai Zherdev are future stars, and things will get better for the BJs.

A unique feature of Nationwide Arena is that it is the only facility in the NHL that has the team's practice rink attached to the stadium. This is also open to the public.

Tickets are available through ticketmaster. You should be able to find pretty good seats for most games. Prices range from $17 - $138.

Ohio State football is more than a game, it is life. This is the best place in America to watch college football. 99% of Buckeye fans are great people and know how to celebrate football and treat opponents with respect. On Saturdays during football season, everyday life stops and the entire city focuses on the Buckeyes.

Ohio Stadium, or The Horseshoe, is the home of the Buckeyes. It opened in 1922 and seats over 100,000. It is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. This is the best stadium in the Big Ten, if not all of college football (sorry, Michigan).

During the game, take in the atmosphere and look over the sea of red in the crowd, listen to the crowd noise, hear all 100,000 fans sing the school song in unison. I have never been more impressed by a football crowd than I was at OSU. These people eat, sleep, and breathe the sport.

After the game, the celebration spills out onto the streets north of the stadium.

Good tickets are hard to find. Scalpers are all over the grounds on gameday, but it will cost you. Ticket brokers are also expensive. The best way to get a good ticket is to know someone or off Ebay. OSU is a member of the Big Ten Conference, so all home games are usually good.

Watch the weather forecast. It can get cold in those upper level seats when the wind is blowing. Dress accordingly.
