Sunwatch Indian Village by kdoc13 Sometime around 1200 AD, a tribe of native Americans lived by the Great Miami River. It must not have smelled so bad back then. But the natives left their stuff there for us to find (the first litterbugs perhaps?) And in the 1960's we did! Seriously though, every school kid in Dayton loves to go to Sunwatch. It is like you are time trippin back to a prehistoric community of some sort. There are huts and people who tell you what it is all about and what they have found. If you have any love for archaeology you will be fascinated with it. I think I have been there at least 20 times in the 14 years I have lived here. Imagine a Colonial Williamsburg, but for pre-history. Plus, there is a gift shop where you can buy native stuff, like native american music. Leave a Comment Address: 2301 West River RoadPhone: 937-268-8199Directions: Take I-75 to Edwin C. Moses Blvd. It is south of downtown on I-75. Get off and go west. Cross over Dryden Road, and start looking for signs on your left. This is river road, and will take you to Sunwatch. Pass the railroad tracks & you missed it.Website: http://www.sunwatch.org/

by kdoc13 The Wright Patterson Air Force Base is home to one of the largest collections of military aircraft I have ever seen. While it does not have the historic planes that the Smithsonian can boast to having, the WPAFB Museum has diversity and volume. Best of all, admission is free! The walk through the museum is divide up by time periods, although they also have a special wing just for missiles. You will not want to miss the Stealth planes which are there, nor the Presidential Aircraft exhibit, which includes the plane that flew JFK's body back from Dallas. You can stand in the spot where LBJ took office or where Jackie O watched him, almost in tears. The connection with history is up close, and personal on this plane. Kids will not be disappointed either. There are plenty of hands on exhibits, bombs to touch and planes to get inside of, and an IMAX theatre. And best of all, there is Astronat Ice Cream in the Gift Shop! Leave a Comment

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery by kdoc13 A kids museum! This is a cool place for kids or adults who like to act like kids. I take dates here, they just don't get it. The exhibits change from time to time, but a lot of it is hands on science based stuff. They have a perigrene falcon on hand, laser shows, and The Hall... of the Universe! Seriously, put you hands on your hips like superman standing and say it in a deep, thundering and inquisical voice with me... "The Hall... of the Universe!" See, its already fun! The hours and things to do are on the web page, I highly reccomend you check it out. Leave a Comment

SunWatch Village by Jim_Eliason SunWatch Village is a 1,000 year old native American village that has been excavated and partially restored. Included is a small museum. The Village is named for the pole structure that exist in the middle of the village creating a stonehenge like calendar that line up the sun position on the solstices. The Dayton Art Institute by kdoc13 There is a lot of art to be seen here. The collections are great, especially the Asian Collection, but I am partial to that one. If you are looking for fine art, we have that too. Jean-Léon Gérôme, Charles Daubigny, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Ker-Xavier Roussel can all be found in the museum as can cubists, and modern American artists. There are other things that go on there, like a classic film series, Oktoberfest, Friday after work parties, the Art-ball, and the vanguard concert series. Leave a Comment Address: 456 Belmonte Park, Dayton OhioPhone: 937-223-5277Directions: If you are on I-75 going through downtown, it is to the west, and you can't miss the place. But getting there you should probably call for directions.Website: http://www.daytonartinstitute.org/

old air show ticket by Voyageuse30 ...you should definitely try to catch the annual Dayton Air & Trade Show, held at the Dayton Int'l Airport every July. Being that Dayton is the Birthplace of Aviation, it really goes all-out for its airshows. There's always an aerial demonstration team featured, such as the Air Force Thunderbirds or the Navy Blue Angels, and there are plenty of static displays. The aerial demonstrations are incredibly fun to watch. I have to admit, I love jets and aviation, so I love going to the Air Show in Dayton! Air Force Museum, Dayton OH by Voyageuse30 You could spend all day (and then some) in this huge collection of jets and biplanes and spacecraft and all sorts of aviation memorabilia (there are more than 300 aircraft and missiles on display) . The museum follows the history of aviation through the very early days up to the present. With a reservation (and photo ID), you can even walk through Presidential aircraft (including the one in which President Johnson was sworn in right after JFK's assassination). The admission for this awesome museum is FREE! There is a cafeteria, gift shop, and an awesome book store on the premises. Leave a Comment

Dayton Art Institute by Voyageuse30 I wouldn't necessarily call this museum a must-see, but it is a nice, albeit small, art museum. You are bound to recognize a painting or two if you're an art follower. The special exhibits are a must see. Not too long ago, the exhibits were on Ansel Adams and Monet. Free admission; some special exhibits may charge an entrance fee. There is a cafe and a museum store. Leave a Comment

The IMAX Theater is not to be missed on your trip to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. This is a three-dimensional visual and audio experience with seating for 500 in a SIX STORY theater without a bad seat in the house. We chose seats in about the center of the theater and the center of the six-story high screen. The IMAX experience, and it truly is an experience, is enhanced by six channel digital sound. Think stereo? Folks, the digital audio is waaay beyond stereo! Five theater program choices were available the day we attended:"Dolphins" for the kids-you will feel you are swimming right along with them-shown twice a day, "Amazon"-a journey of discovery of the Amazon's wonders, inhabitants and remarkable healing powers-shown once a day, The Magic of Flight", soar through the history of flight from the Wright Brothers to the dramatic high-speed aerobatics of the Blue Angels-shown once a day, "Straight Up, Helicopters in Action", travel with helicopter crews as they respond to real-world needs-including a high-sea rescue, a drug bust, humanitarian aid and land and sea military maneuvers-shown twice a day, and "Fighter Pilot-Operation Red Flag", the USAF in action as the latest fighters, bombers, and other aircraft tear up the Nevada desert at Red Flag, the air combat readiness training for all allied air forces around the world-shown three times a day. Being all aircraft pilots, we attended "Fighter Pilot-Operation Red Flag" and were thrilled with the specter of being right in the middle of the flying action-stupendous realism and you could almost feel the aerobatic g forces at near-mach speeds! My senior ticket price was $6, and well worth it. Plan on attending one of the shows at IMAX during your tour of the museum. For show times and prices, contact the IMAX Theater at the number below. IMAX has something for everyone, from toddlers to seniors.
