    Symmes Hollow Earth Monument

In Symmes Park we found this monument to soldier/philosopher, John Cleves Symmes. I was particularly interested in seeking out this site while in Hamilton because I had long been intrigued by "Symmes Theory of Concentric Spheres and Polar Voids". He contended that the earth is hollow and habitable within. Before you laugh out loud, consider that this belief was shared by such notables as Sir Edmund Halley, the British astronomer of Halley's Comet fame, and Admiral Richard Byrd, first explorer to reach both the North and South Poles. Thousands of people around the world still believe in Symmes theory.

The monument was erected in 1840 by Americus Symmes to mark the grave site of his father. It was restored by Historical Hamilton Inc. in 1991. You will find the two acre Symmes Park a few blocks south of downtown Hamilton, between 3rd and 4th Streets and the railroad tracks. A six foot iron fence protects the monument, which is topped with a stone obelisk with a hole through it..

There are some sculptures to see by the river. Don't miss them! Some of them are so life like! You'll have to look twice at them to make sure they are not real.
