    Malabar Farm State Park

Louis Bromfield's Home at Malabar Farm

Malabar Farm was the home of author Louis Bromfield. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart were married there. When I was a child, this was all private but it has been a state park for a long time now. The drive to the park is beautiful, going through one of the magical places of my childhood.

Bromfield was a conservationist long before global warming was a concept. In the 1940s he was advocating for sustainable agriculture and preservation of resources. He was a pioneer in the field and should be remembered. A visit to his Malabar Farm is a good place to start . . . .and lots of fun in a beautiful environment.

The farm is a working farm with animals, demonstrations and exhibits. The main house is open to visitors and one historic building is a youth hostel.

Check the web site for a list of activities. My favorite is when they tap the maple trees and have a sugaring off. It is opened to the public and there are hay rides and tastings. There may also be snow but it just adds to the atmosphere.

    See the prison

On the northeast corner of Mansfield. Take highway 30 and take the exit onto hwy 545. The prison is just north of the exit, but if you are eastbound you must exit to your right, toward the south. Then you will turn north on 545.

One of the photos shows the "Shawshank Tree" which plays a role in the movie; Morgan Freeman's character finds a box hidden near this tree at the end of the movie. Unfortunately the tree was killed recently during a storm.

Of course there are. How could you doubt?

This is Kingwood Center in Mansfield, Ohio. Dr. King left his beautiful chateau to the city of Mansfield and it has become a horticultural center. The house is open to the public; there is a lovely pond with ducks and other fowl to feed; gardens are lovely all year. I've even visited in January and enjoyed it although spring when the dogwood is blooming is just spectacular.

I've never failed to visit Kingwood when I've been in town. It is an oasis of peace and beauty. It is always full of families strolling and enjoying.

    Hand-carved Carousel

by tayloretc Written Jan 25, 2006

Nearly in the town center is a covered carousel, partly new hand-carved, partly restored. Closed when I got there, but it looks like a nice place to rent out for kids parties. These kinds of carousels are few and far between these days...

    Trees

Mansfield Prison has pretty much laid exposed to the elements for a number of years until recently. As you can see, the trees are trying to take over.

Almost the entire movie "The Shawshank Redemption" was also filmed at Mansfield. There are still a few props left over from the filming.
