  • Brandywine Falls in Cuyahoga Valley National Park - Ohio
    Brandywine Falls in
    Cuyahoga Valley National
    Park
    by Stephen-KarenConn
Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves 33,000 acres along 22 miles of the crooked Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. Being surrounded by a densely populated urban area, Cuyahoga Valley is not as wild nor is the scenery as majestic as most of America's national parks, yet it offers much of scenic, historical and recreational value.

In the early 1960s spreading development threatened to take over this valley. Individual citizens joined forces with state and local governments to save the greenspace and historic features. Their efforts crossed paths with the National Park Service, which was then establishing urban recreation areas as a way to bring national parks to people living in cities. In 1974, Congress created Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area as an urban park of the National Park System. In 2000, the recreation area became Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

When we visited here Karen and I enjoyed hiking to several waterfalls, and also exploring the many historical attractions along the old Ohio & Erie Canal. A special treat was taking a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad which runs between Cleveland and Canton.

The park is open year round, although certain activities may vary with the season. Check the web link below for the latest details.

  • Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial - Ohio
    Perry's Victory &
    International Peace
    Memorial
    by Stephen-KarenConn
This monument, administered by the National Park Service, commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie, Sept. 10, 1813, when Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry captured a squadron of British warships, in the War of 1812. This helped secure the United States' position and northwestern territorial border on Lake Erie. The purpose of the memorial is not only to celebrate an American naval triumph, but also "to inculate the lessons of international peace by arbitration and disarmament."

The Memorial Column stands 352-feet tall and was built in 1915. It is topped by an open-air observation deck which may be reached by first climbing two flights of stairs and then taking an elevator. We were there on a clear late summer day and views of the Lake Erie Islands were spectacular, extending all the way to Pelee Island in Ontario, Canada.

In the park Visitor Center you will find historical exhibits, an orientation film, and a bookstore.

    Hours:
    Open Daily, late-April through mid-October
    9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Extended hours in summer 'till 7:00 PM

  • Karen at King's Island - Ohio
    Karen at King's Island
    by Stephen-KarenConn
Paramount Kings Island is one of America's premier amusement parks with thrill rides for everyone from toddlers to adults, and also an awesome water park. Roller Coasters are the main attraction, and they have many of them. Our favorite is "Son of Beast." It is the tallest, fastest and only looping wooden coaster in the world. Son of Beast's 7,032 feet of twisted steel track includes a 214-feet drop at a speed of 78 m.p.h. It will scare you senseless and have you begging for more. The downside is that the lines can be very long, especially on week-ends and holidays.

The price is not cheap at $26.99 per day, but season passes are a bargain if you live close enough to use them throughout the season. Food in the park is mediocre and overpriced. A family can easily go through a couple hundred dollars here in a day and go home queasy, sunburned and exhausted. Some people think that's heaven.

    by Stephen-KarenConn
The Hopewell Culture National Historic Park preserves a small portion of the mounds and earthworks which were built by the American Indians known as the Hopewell People, who thrived in the Ohio River Valley area from about 200 B.C. until 500 A.D. The site includes a modern Visitor Center where one may watch an orientation film, view museum exhibits and purchase books and other items of interest.

The earthworks preserved here are known as the Mound City Group. Guided tours are available, but when I visited the Park with my youngest son, Jeromy, we opted for a self guided tour. The mounds and exhibits offer insight into the social, ceremonial, political and economic life of the Hopewell People, who vanished many centuries before the first European explorers came to this area.

If you are a bridge lover there is an oddity to be found in Zanesville. It's a "Y" shaped bridge.

The picture is from an old postcard found on a website about unusual bridges.

    West Side Market

  • A great place for the cook who loves fresh items! Or just a great place for a family day trip! You can get the freshest meats, cheeses, breads, eggs, fish, fruits & veggies, sweets & treats as well as fresh spices, dry goods, lunch meats and yes...even fresh ground peanut butter!! You can also have a one of a kind bouquet of flowers made for that special someone! Located in the neighborhood of "Ohio City" it is a MUST SEE while in Cleveland! But be warned...if you are planning on shopping here, bring lots of cash as not alot of vendors take checks or credit cards. And a back pack or other comfortable bag is a great idea to carry your treasures and finds around in! If you are buying meats, I highly suggest stashing a cooler in your trunk with ice to keep it nice and cool! The West Side Market is a great Cleveland treasure!

*You can see the West Side Market on "$40 a day with Rachel Ray" on the Food Network.*

  • A "must see" in my opinion is the Rock -n- Roll Hall of Fame, Jacobs Field, Science Museum (if you have kids), and the views over Lake Erie.
All of these can be enjoyed by folks of all ages.

Karen in Front of the "Big
    House" at Malabar Farm
    by Stephen-KarenConn
Malabar Farm State Park is a 900-acre working farm which was once the home of Pulitzer prize winning author and agriculturist Louis Bromfield. The centerpiece of the farm is the 32 room "Big House" where Bromfield lived and wrote, and where many of the day's rich and famous visited. Two of the biggest movie stars of their time, Humphry Bogart and Lauren Bacall, were married in this house on May 21, 1945.

"Malabar," an ancient Indian word, means "beautiful valley," and it is that indeed. Among the many things you can do here are:

    Tour the big house
    See farm animals
    Go square dancing
    Take a wagon ride
    Do primitive camping
Fish in one of four stocked ponds
    Take a Hike
See deer, bluebirds and other wildlife
    Have a picnic
    Shop at the roadside market
    Learn about sustainable farming
    Go cross-country skiing
    Go ice skating
Stay in one of only two hostels in Ohio
Relax, have fun, and a whole lot more.

Hours and activities vary with the season so see the web link below for current listings.

This is one of my favorite spots in Ohio, and an excellent choice for a day trip in the central part of the state. It combines scenic beauty, history, and some of the best ice cream you've ever tasted.

The original grist mill was built in 1817 in Ohio's Licking River Valley.Today it is the picturesque site of the Velvet Ice Cream headquarters and factory, and the only ice cream museum in Ohio. Velvet is a family owned business, operated since 1914, by 4 generations ofthe Dager family. The ice cream is a regional favorite in Ohio and a few neighboring cities. In addition to the mill, this 20 acre site includes a visitor center, restaurant, 19th century style ice cream parlor, gift shop, picnic area, children's playground, petting zoo, nature trails and more. Admission is free and entertainment is often provided on the weekends.

The museum and restaurant are open daily, May through October, with attraction tours hourly.
