National Football League Hall of Fame

by Ewingjr98

Officially named the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it really should be called the NFL Hall of Fame, since it is run by the NFL and only includes other professional leagues (like the USFL and XFL) after the NFL runs them out of business. Even today the Canadian Football League is excluded. It opened in Canton, Ohio, United States, on September 7, 1963. Canton was selected for the HOF because it was the birthplace of the NFL in 1920 and the Canton Bulldogs were a successful franchise for many years. I also like to think this is a special site because it is nearly midway between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, the epicenters of the AFC Central. HOF players are selected by a 44-person panel made up mostly of sportswriters from current NFL cities. 80 percent support is required to gain entrance into the hall, and the annual class is required t be from four to seven people (if any of the top four vote...

Tower City & Environs

by DueSer

Tower City is located in an area of Cleveland where there is a lot happening. The professional sports teams' stadiums are down here, The Arcade is down here, and a lot of high rises. In the Tower Center itself are restaurants, like the Hard Rock Cafe, shops, like Borders bookstore, a concert venue, hotels, and a movie theater. Step outside though, and you can discover more than just a lot of high rises. There is some art here too. The sculpture on my Ohio introduction page is down here. So is the library and their unique gates, pictured here. These little touches make a trip outside the stadium or the mall or the office worthwhile. If you're in town on business and your business takes you to this part of town, don't just hurry in and out of your meetings. Before or after, take a while to walk around and enjoy this area. It's beautiful and the city should be commended for putting in the...

Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame

by DueSer

As far as museums go, this is surprisingly well done. I didn't have very high hopes, not sure why, I guess after visiting the (now defunct) Experience Music Project in Seattle, I pictured something similar - very high entrance fees coupled with not that much to see. Happily, I was wrong.First of all, the building that houses the museum is striking. White stone and glass, it sits right on the edge of Lake Erie. The architecture lets in a lot of natural light. The exhibits range from the foundation of rock music in blues and jazz to the pioneers of the genre - not just performers but DJs and producers as well. There is a lot of focus given to the biggies - Beatles, Stones, and Elvis - as well as to the tools of the trade - guitars, music video props, and costumes performers have worn. It all works well together to give those who may not realize where rock came from or why Cleveland is so...

The First Enclosed Shopping Mall in America

by DueSer

The Arcade holds the distiction of being the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States. Built in 1890, it has been very well preserved. The architectural touches are excellent and stylish. It's located in downtown Cleveland, near Tower Center. It's a nice mall but when I visited I was surprised at how many empty storefronts there were. This worries me as I visited before all this nasty economic mess began so if times are even tougher who knows how long The Arcade may be around. The Hyatt Regency Hotel is located on the upper floors so it's possible to stay here. It's a very centrally located albeit rather expensive place to stay.

Cleveland Botanic Gardens

by DueSer

This garden is a delightful, relaxing spot in the middle of Cleveland. There are 10 different gardens including a lovely Japanese garden and a woodland garden, which is terrific in the fall. They also now have a 18,000 square foot conservatory with 2 sections - one is made to resemble a desert in Madagascar and the other a Costa Rican rainforest. The rainforest has butterflies, the desert has some critters too. They also have a shop and a cafe.

Put-In-Bay - Lake Erie's Party Island

by WheninRome

Put-In-Bay (the island is actually named South Bass Island, but is most well known for the party hotspot of Put-In-Bay) is like a world inunto itself. The island is perfectly situated about a 30 minute ferry ride out into the sparkling clear waters of Lake Erie. Put-In-Bay is a great place to spend a summer afternoon, or an afternoon and evening. However, if you are there to party and do not have overnight accomodations, be sure to catch the last ferry back to the mainland or you will be SOL.There is a lot to do on the island whether you are a partier or not. Perry's Monument is fun to explore. As are the myriad shops and restaurants in and around the Bay. We brought our bicycles with us on the ferry and enjoyed exploring the island by bike, including the State Park and chocolate museum, which was delicious. You can also rent golf carts with which to explore the island. And you never...

President Taft's Birthplace

by DueSer

Located in a pleasant neighborhood, President Taft's birthplace and boyhood home is now a wonderful museum. Born in Cinci, Taft went on to become not only president but also the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and getting a glimpse into his extremely normal childhood offers some insight not only into the man but also the type of person it takes to reach the highest office in the nation. The museum is furnished and has a lot of photographs. It's one of those museums that's so well preserved that it appears as though the Taft family is gone to church and will be home soon. Picturing life here is easy, making for an interesting visit. This is one of the best presidential birthplace museums in the country.

KENYON COLLEGE

by mtncorg

Kenyon is the oldest institute of higher education in Ohio dating to 1824. Episcopal bishop Philander Chase was hoping to found a school in which he could train clergy for parish work on the frontier of Ohio. He went to England to solicit funds for his school and was very successful. In appreciation, he named the college after one of the bigger benefactors, Lord George Kenyon, and named the surrounding village after another big donor, Lord Gambier - a British admiral known for his success in the battle of Copenhagen in 1897 and his failure in allowing a full-out victory in the battle of Basque Roads a year later; Gambier was also on the British panel who helped develop the treaty that ended the War of 1812. The College celebrates many well-known alumni including Rutherford B. Hayes - 19th President of the United States, Edwin Stanton - Attorney General during the Buchanan Administration...

HIRAM COLLEGE

by mtncorg

Originally, Hiram College was known as the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute. The school was founded as by the Disciples of Christ Church in 1850 but has been nondenominational as well as coeducational from the beginning. The most famous alum was James Garfield who was student, instructor and principal of the school in the late 1850's. He also met his wife here. He left Hiram in 1961 as commander of Company A of the 42nd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers, a regiment recruited from Hiram. He would go on to become a major general and then onward to Congress and eventually the Presidency in 1880. The school was officially elevated to the level of a college in 1867 and remains an excellent place to study, just as 'free of distractions' today as it was when it founders sited the school here in 1850. The town has very little in the way of offering potential 'trouble' to a student, in fact, 95% of...
