JAMES A. GARFIELD MONUMENT - LAKEVIEW CEMETERY

by mtncorg

Finished in 1890, the Garfield Monument was built as a tomb and memorial to the dead President. Both President Benjamin Harrison and former President Rutherford Hayes attended the dedication ceremonies here at Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland's most historic resting grounds sitting high above Little Italy. There are five base-reliefs arranged around the tomb which depict different episodes of Garfield's life. Inside the tomb, you find a life-sized Carrera marble statue of Garfield in the Memorial Room with the caskets of Garfield and his wife, Lucretia, being located underneath along with urns for the ashes of his daughter and son-in-law. There are steps that led up to an observation deck from which you can overlook Cleveland and Lake Erie from. It is reported that the ghost of Garfield can still be seen in and around the monument. Sometimes he likes to play a game of chess with that other...

LAWNFIELD - MENTOR

by mtncorg

Lawnfield is the name given by reporters to the home of President James Garfield sitting in front of the busy US 20 in Mentor, Ohio. Garfield had bought the house as part of a farm in 1876 at which time the house was a nine room one and a half story house. With an ever increasing family, Garfield increased the size of the home to 20 rooms and two and a half stories. Much of the house you see today is from another even larger renovation in the middle 1880's after Garfield's assassination. But the front porch and the small personal library/campaign headquarter building to the rear of the house were there when Garfield ran the first 'front porch' campaign in which Presidential candidates began to more actively campaign for office. Before this time, most candidates remained quiet and presidential during the campaigns, letting others do the talking for them. From here, Garfield met many...

MCKINLEY MUSEUM AND LIBRARY

by mtncorg

At the base of the McKinley Tomb can be found on the west side, the McKinley Museum and Library. Operated by the Stark County Historical Society, there are exhibits both pertaining to the history of Stark County and William McKinley. Covering more ground, there is also a science museum and a planetarium to round out the offerings here. Cost is $7 for adults and hours are 9-5 except on Sundays when it is noon-5 pm. I was naturally here on a Sunday at about 11 am. Since it was Easter Sunday, I walked a couple of laps at the Long Lawn in front of the museum before deciding to push on to the south and Zoar. Which I would find out I could not get to because of high water. On the plus side, there were no crowds.

MCKINLEY TOMB

by mtncorg

Standing atop a 75 foot hill overlooking Canton, Ohio where he had spent a good portion of his adult life, is the circular domed granite tomb of the 25th President, William McKinley. Unlike the other three men who came from northern Ohio - Garfield, Hayes and Harding - there is no McKinley residence that has survived until today - though the family home of his wife Ida does survive in downtown Canton housing the present National First Ladies Library. Following his assassination in 1901 in Buffalo at the hands of an anarchist, McKinley was temporarily laid to rest in the adjacent Westview Cemetery while work progressed on this memorial mausoleum. Dedicated in 1907, this is the final resting place for both President McKinley, his wife and their two girls. The tomb stands atop 108 steps and a large sunken lawn fronts the steps - the lawn used to the Long Waters but maintenance problems led...

HARDING TOMB - Marion, Ohio

by mtncorg

Located on the south edge of Marion on Ohio route 423, Harding's tomb is located surrounded by the Marion Cemetery where Harding's body had first been laid to rest while the memorial tomb was under construction. The tomb occupies a ten acre space of grounds and is more dramatic a tomb than one would think reading current Presidential rankings. But current rankings do not take into account the actual popularity Harding enjoyed at the time of his death. He was also elected with just over 60% of the popular vote in 1920, a figure reached only rarely by others. The circular white marble tomb has both the tomb of President Harding and his wife, Florence. There is a monument plaque in front of the tomb from which you can find out more about Harding's career and the construction of the monument.

MARION - HARDING HOME

by mtncorg

Marion, Ohio was the longtime home of the 29th President, Warren Gamaliel Harding. He had a career in journalism including editing and publishing the local newspaper, the Marion Star. An on and off political career eventually landed him the chance to give the nomination speech for fellow Ohioan William Howard Taft at the 1912 GOP convention He followed that up by being elected to a US Senate seat for Ohio in 1914. Finally, in 1920, the stars aligned and Harding became yet another dark horse to be elected to the Presidency. His term of office was marred by scandals from within his administration for which he slipped from high contemporary popularity to nearly the bottom rungs of Presidents remembered today. Of the three presidential homes that have been preserved in northern Ohio, the Harding home is the most modest. The home was constructed in 1891 and is furnished mostly with...

SPIEGEL GROVE

by mtncorg

Fremont, Ohio is the site of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center at which you can tour the home of the former President as well as take in both the Hayes Museum and do a little research at the self-titled 'America's First Presidential Library'. The entire complex is located within a forested grove of some 25 acres atop bluffs above the Sandusky River on the south side of the town. An old Indian trail wound through the grounds in earlier times and is memorialized with a maintained trail that also leads to the tomb of President Hayes, his son, Colonel Webb Hayes and their wives. The land was bought by the President's uncle Sardis Brichard in 1846 who admired the wooded landscape, giving it its German name (Spiegel = Mirror) for the memories of German fairy tales the forests evoked. He built a home here in 1859 with the intent that Rutherford Hayes and his family would also live...

St LUCY of SYRACUSE, Shrine of Sorrowful Mother

by mtncorg

St Lucy definitely deserves her own separate tip since she is the Saint of Eyesight. She lived in Syracuse in the 300's and was totally devoted to the Christian faith of the time. She was said to have been a very beautiful woman, but beauty to her just got in the way of her devotion to the Christian cause. One would-be suitor came up to her and mentioned that she had gorgeous eyes, whereupon, she pulled them out and offered them to him. Because her devotion to God was so apparent and inexhaustible, her eyesight was restored instantaneously. She is the Saint to whom believers seek intervention with when they have their own issues with eyesight.

SHRINE OF THE SORROWFUL MOTHER

by mtncorg

Located in a grove of woods surrounded by farm fields in northern Ohio about ten miles south of the town of Bellevue, you find the Shrine of the Sorrowful Mother which, dating back to 1850 and Father Francis de Sales Brunner - a Swiss missionary priest of the Order of the Most Precious Blood - claims to be the oldest Catholic pilgrimage site dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Midwest. The present chapel dates to 1914 while the immense outdoor chapel was added in 1968 to accommodate the numerous busloads of pilgrims that come in from the nearby large Catholic ethnic communities found in Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and others. Trails lead among the trees of the grove leading to the Stations of the Cross, replicas of the Lourdes Grotto and other memorials devoted to various Saints. The pathways ae flat and the whole trail is but a mile in length. The Shrine is definitely an...

KIRTLAND TEMPLE

by mtncorg

In December 1832, Joseph Smith, Jr., revealed a commandment directing him to erect a temple in Kirtland. It was to be “a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.” Construction was not able to start until the following summer and was completed in the spring of 1836. Even with working on the temple themselves, the costs were upwards towards $60000, a very large sum that when combined with the prodigious efforts required to settle the many new converts both in the Kirtland area and in Missouri put a severe strain on the church’s finances. That financial constraint would lead to the ill-advised Kirtland Safety Society Bank, whose failure would lead to another Mormon exodus. The temple was one of the largest buildings built in northern Ohio at the time of completion. The exterior is reminiscent of a New...
