Beautiful countryside!

by Bwana_Brown

After spending a night on the outskirts of Toledo, Ohio at the western end of Lake Erie, my wife and I set out on the Interstate highways again in the morning, eventually reaching Eau Claire, Wisconsin that evening after skirting around the southern edge of Chicago. It wasn't long after we were on the road that we were treated to some impressive countryside in western Ohio, thanks to the autumn leaves and a dark rain squall that was passing just north of the highway. The autumn of 2007 was one of the driest on record, causing all the deciduous trees to be running a week or two behind their normal changing of the leaf colours. Based on what I saw, it would be worth your while to spend some time enjoying this area in early to mid-October if you want to see some great foliage!Another interesting thing was the system of 'Deer Warning' alarms at various locations along this part of the...

Cleveland looks quite nice

by Bwana_Brown

On my long ago business trip to Cleveland, I remember staying somewhere out in the suburbs in a very posh-looking neighbourhood with lots of beautiful homes and large leafy trees lining the streets. I was quite impressed with the quiet elegance of the area and thought I wouldn't mind a return visit. That chance came in October, 2007 but we had to clock 10-hours driving and 1000-km per day in order to reach our destination on time, so once again there was no time to slow down to enjoy the city! We came into the city on Interstate highway 80/90 from Albany, NY and it took us right along the waterfront and through the heart of downtown, allowing us the chance for a quick shot of Cleveland's skyline as we moved along with the traffic. The thing about Cleveland that most stands out in my mind is that it was the source of the August, 2003 blackout that shut down all of northern Ohio, Detroit,...

JUST CEDAR POINT

I was in a dream. I had fun, I wanted more, I'll be going there again next year! 5 stars! See the pictures.Visit on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Plan 2 days to do all the rides. Buy your ticket on line. It's easy, cheap and fast when you get to the gates.A must for adults because of the big and though rides.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

by JREllison

The Northeastern of what is now Ohio orginally was claimed by Connecticut and was known as the "Western Reserve". The valley of the Cuyahoga River became an attriction for settlers, the river serving as a means of transporting goods to Lake Erie for shipment to the Eastern seaboard. The mid 1820's saw a canal along the river that could handle canal boats, later the railroad followed this same route. Today the National Park preserves the orginal beauty of the valley, the river, canal and railroad.Take a ride on the operating railroad or hike/bike along the canal tow path. The natural areas contail forest trails and beautiful streams with rippling falls.

Rock n Roll HOF

by chellediva

I visited Cleveland for a day during a trip to Ohio and we took in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. What a great collection of memorabilia and stories about the history of American music. I saw Jim Morrison's death certificate as well as Tom Petty's "Mad Hatter" hat from the Alice in Wonderland video. Recommended activity in Cleveland, as well as spending some time near the waterfront.

Lake Erie Lighthouses

by WheninRome

After our vacation to Maine last summer we became very interested in lighthouses and were surprised after doing a little research to find out that Ohio had 15 of its own. Thus, we embarked upon eventually visiting each of the fifteen. The Huron Harbor lighthouse was our first and it is pictured below. It is located at the mouth of the Huron River, in the town of Hudson in Erie County, Ohio. Finding the lighthouse was quite an adventure in and of itself. Unlike many ocean communities where lighthouses are large tourist attractions, the directions to the Huron Harbor Lighthouse were not well marked at all. Basically, we drove over the Huron River off of Route 6 and at the first opportunity west of the river began driving north through the town of Hudson. We found a place to park across from a bait store near the mouth of the Huron River, but we still could not see the lighthouse. We set...

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

by Toughluck

Ohio's 'National Park' is as much a natural area nestled into 20 miles of the Cuyahoga Rivers valley that stretches from Cleveland to Akron as it is an historic area. The opens valley reflects the countryside of the 19th century when the Ohio & Erie Canal was the main route of transportation along the river and family farms dominated the landscape. See my Cuyahoga Valley page for details.
