Cleveland - the Forest City

by Toughluck

Cleveland has been the leading city in Ohio for nearly 200 years. Only since 1980 has Columbus become a major economic center in addition to it's political activities as the state Capitol. My ClevelandpageCleveland has been the northern link in the '3 C's', that is Cleveland, Columbus, & Cincinnati. These have always been the main cities of Ohio. Unlike many states, Ohio has always had numerous cities that provide economic power and energy in the state. Althought the 3 C's have always been the biggest, Toledo, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and Dayton have provided their own uniquness to what is Ohio.Cuyahoga Valley National Park adjoins the city on the south side.

Amish Country

by WheninRome

The Amish have moved and settled into several different parts of Ohio; however, Amish country is typically referred to as the area in Northeast Ohio east of Wooster, west of New Philadelphia/Dover and south of Massillon. It comprises a significant area and several communities, but is centered around the towns of Berlin and Millersburg, Ohio. The Amish provide an insight into almost an early settler lifestyle and I admire their hardiness and work ethic. If you go in the spring and early summer you will see them working fields by horse and hand. They travel to and from town via horse and buggy, by foot, or by bike - rain, snow, or shine. There are lots of shopping opportunities for both men and women. Hardwood furniture shops abound and in many the quality is exceptional. There are knick-knacks and frilly things, of course. Several small hunting and fishing shops and a few hardware stores....

Bike the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

by WheninRome

The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail (Towpath Trail) stretches for more than 70 miles from Cleveland to New Philadelphia in Northeast Ohio, passing through numerous communities along the way. The Towpath Trail is great for an afternoon ride or an all-day adventure. It is also a great way to see the beauty of Northeast Ohio and the Cuyahoga Valley. The Towpath Trail approximately follows the old Ohio & Erie Canal, which was built in the early 1800's to speed navigation and the transportation of goods from New York to Ohio and from northern to southern Ohio. The canals dominated navigation in Ohio through the early 1800's until the rise of the railroads in the 1850's.Today, the Towpath Trail follows the Ohio & Erie Canal in Northeast Ohio through numerous Metroparks and much of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Much of the Canal in this area is still physically intact and has water in it up...

Seneca Caverns

by Stephen-KarenConn

Seneca Caverns, in northern Ohio, is billed as the "Caviest Cave in the USA." Having visited dozens of caves throughout America, I would have to agree. At least the tour through Seneca Caverns is the most rugged of any commercial cave tour I have ever experienced. This one is only for those who are in relatively good physical condition. It's not just a walk along an underground pathway, but a 110-foot vertical scramble, hands over feet, down a series of seven levels of a "crack in the earth."Unlike most caverns, this one was created by a collapse of underground rock layers and not by water flowing through the passages. There are virtually no stalagtite or stalagmite formations. The largest underground room is 250 feet in length. At several places on the tour you will have to stoop almost to the point of being on hands and knees. At other spots the cave ceiling may be 30 feet above...

Cuyahoga National Park

Cuyahoga National Park is just south of Cleveland and follows the Cuyahoga river valley and the path of the old Ohio & Erie Canal. It has a long paved biking/jogging trail that runs the length of the valley.

Visit Columbus, Ohio

by deecat

Visit my Columbus, Ohio, pagesAbout the only thing that Jill and I knew about Columbus, Ohio, before we planned this trip was that it had a world-class zoo. What we discovered by spending two nights and three days in Columbus was that the city has much more than a zoo.We discovered German Village, a restored community south of the downtown center where German immigrants settled between 1840 and 1860. There is the Short North area located near German Village and just north of the downtown area. This district is known as the city's version of New York's "SoHo" area. It has trendy boutiques, art galleries, coffeehouses, restaurants, and nightclubs. Also, immediately west of the Short North district is an up-and-coming neighborhood called the Arena District. Its focal point is the Nationwide Arena (a beautiful mixed-use facility with a glass enclosed atrium, open lobbies & concorses....

Visit Historic Roscoe Village in Coshocton, OH

by deecat

A real must see, in my opinion, would be Roscoe Village, in Coshocton, Ohio. It is a beautifully-restored 1800s canal town with charming original 19th century buildings. The town reflects the love of history, beauty, and nature. There's a combination of shops, living history buildings, restaurants, and private homes accented by brick sidewalks and pocket gardens. While there, it's imperative to take a "Living History Tour", which gives insight into the early days of Roscoe. You'll visit the "craftsman's simple family home, the one-room schoolhouse, the blacksmith's shop, the print shop, and the doctor's home and office." You can also watch the cooper, broom maker, and weaver. You are offered the opportunity to try candle dipping, tin punching, weaving and printing. If you are lucky enough to be assigned Carter (our tour guide), you will have the time of your life. After theLiving History...

First Ladies National Historic Site, Canton, OH

by deecat

While in Canton, we were delighted to tour the First Ladies National Historic Site which included the former home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley & the Education and Research Center (ERC) with its First Ladies' research library, exhibits, & a small theater. The ERC is located 1 block north of the Saxton House in the former City National Bank Building. The actual tour begins at the ERC & then continues to the Saxton House. At the home, a docent dressed in First Ladies' period costume took us & about 6 others through the home pointing out McKinley era furnishings. The rooms have been restored to their original splendor. Jill & I were especially impressed with the historical wallpaper, carpets, & period furniture. The renovated ballroom on the 3rd floor of the house was quite lovely; President McKinley's study included wallpapers custom-made to match the authentic paper pictured in an early...

Visit Canton,Ohio

by deecat

Originally, Jill really wanted to visit Canton, Ohio, because of a special quilt shop; however, she found out it was not open to the public; thus, I did some homework and discovered that The First Ladies National Historic Site was located there. We are both quite interested in history, especially women of importance historically. Most people visit Canton, Ohio, to visit the The Professional Football Hall of Fame, and that's also a good reason to visit. If you enjoy good food, Benders Tavern would be a perfect reason to go there.Other interesting place to investigate in Canton are The McKinley National Memorial, the Hoover Price Planetarium, Discover World (collections of fossils, rocks, and live animals).I have a friend whose husband once lived there, and she asked me why in the world I would ever want to go there....after my visit, I can now give her some good answers!
