Altus is a town of just under 20,000 (up 8% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highways 62 and 283 in Southwest Oklahoma near the border with Texas. Altus was settled in 1886 as Frazer and later changed its name to Altus (meaning "High place"). The town is home to an air force base and a college, and is the county seat of Jackson County. Around Thanksgiving, the downtown park in Altus puts on the best display of Christmas lights I have ever seen. The whole park become decked out in lights and artistic displays. You'll find scenes from your favorite Disney scenes as well as other traditional Christmas-type displays. A trolley circles the park and stands are set up with hot cider and cocoa. Carolers can be heard and the town seems to come to life at this event.

By far, the best eatery in Altus. Cozy and cheap. What more could you want? Okay, also centrally located at Main and A Street. You chouldn't possibly ask for anything more.
Favorite Dish: Chicken Fried Steak and a cold beer (striaght out of the bottle - don't be posh and ask for a glass).

Being away for over 6 years, I forgot how friendly folks are back home. It's nearly impossible to travel down the back country roads and not be waved at by an old-timer or sandy farmer. It's not an insult; it's not that you look like someone they once knew; it's simply good manners.
I think we should all take time no matter our schedule, our destination, our culture and simply wave as we pass one another. At the very least, it reminds us that we're all human and on this world together. A simple flick of the hand and you've connected with another. Simple and over-analyzing? Probably. But I miss it. So I'll see ya on the road, on the back stretch, on the way home, but until then ***waves*** have a good one! (HAGO!)
