    Alva and Woods County

by Basaic Written Oct 4, 2014

Alva is a town of about 4900 (down 7% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highways 64 and 281 in Woods County in Northern Oklahoma near the Kansas border. There was a settlement here along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad and Alva the town was established in 1893 as a land office for the release of land in this area for the Cherokee Outlet Land Run which settled much of Central Oklahoma. Alva is the county seat of Woods County, which was named for Samuel N. Wood. The current Woods County Courthouse is modern in appearance and is better looking than many newer courthouses.
