The town of Heavener has a welcome center on the edge of town. This is a great place to stop to get information on the town, the runestone and other attractions in the area. The lady that was there when I visited was friendly and knowledgeable.

Heavener Runestone State Park is located on Poteau Mountain just outside the city limits of Heavener. Heavener sits at the base of Poteau Mountain. Located in the park is a slab of rock that is 12 feet tall, and 10 feet wide. There is Norse rune writing on the rock many believe was left there by the Vikings. It is believed the Norse Rune was carved in the year 1011.

There are many hiking trails, a gift shop, picnic tables, and a park with play equipment. There is a lovely view of the Poteau river Valley from a parking area Just up from the rune stone entrance.
