    Veterans Memorial

by Basaic Written Oct 21, 2014

This nice veterans memorial was placed on the grounds of the county courthouse in 1923 to honor Comanche County Veterans who served in World War 1. It has since been expanded to honor ALL of the nation's veterans. I feel it is important to remember the sacrifices made by our veterans and their contributions to our freedom and our way of life.

    Old Lawton High School

by Basaic Written Oct 21, 2014

Lawton High School was the first high school in town. The school was established in 1901 and the building was completed in 1909. This impressive building has gone through various uses since the high school moved out and is currently the Lawton City Hall. The Old Lawton High School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Make note of the Bison statue in Photo 3. A local told me it was a tradition to rub the nose and horns of the statue before a sports game to ensure victory.

    Lawton and Comanche County

by Basaic Written Oct 21, 2014

Lawton is a city of about 98,000 (up 6% since 2000) located at the intersection of Interstate 44 and US Highway 62 in Comanche County in South Central Oklahoma. The area was long occupied by various Indian tribes like the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache, along with pre-historic habitation (like the Clovis People some 13,000 years ago). The town was formed in 1901 after Indian lands here were opened to settlers and was named after General Henry W. Lawton. General Lawton received the Medal of Honor for actions during the Civil War, served in various Indian Campaigns and the Spanish American War and was killed in action during a campaign in the Philippines in 1899. Much of the economic success and stability of the city was due to its location near the army base Fort Sill, but the city has developed a diverse economy since the early days. Lawton is the county seat of Comanche County which was formed in 1901 and was named after the Comanche Indians. The Comanche County Courthouse is pretty new but is a nice example of how modern architecture can still be esthetically pleasing.

  • Sight Seeing

by LawtonFaith Updated Apr 4, 2011

The Lawton View area is a misunderstood neighborhood where there is a lot of talent but just directed in another path. For example I met someone there who is very talented and he has a website, if your into R&B or rap you will like what he has to offer. His ambition is what made me notice how much talent is truly hidden in this small town. What amazes me is that in this small city that has old roads and buildings there are those in the Lawton View area that have talent ready to be heard. The Lawton View area should be a sight seeing area to learn about ambition from a small town. They built a website and its www.notwal.com.

    Mount Scott

The Wichita Mountains sometimes called the Ancestral Rockies because they are thought to have been that vast, with the younger Rockies at the tail of the ancient Wichita Range.
These are the oldest mountains in the great plains. They mainly consist of granite, rhyolite, and some other igneous rocks and are considered to be about 300 million years old. The tallest peak is Mt. Scott and many scoff at the title "mountain" as it stands only about 2500 feet above sea level. But on this flat part of the earth, that is a mountain!

    Geronimo's Last Stand

    by mrclay2000 Written Apr 19, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Apache chief Geronimo lies near the most conspicuous marker in the Apache cemetery. His wife, offspring and near-relatives lie nearby. All that is required to access the military base is the presentation of a picture I.D. (your driver's license is sufficient) and a few miles of driving before reaching the Apache graveyard. Geronimo's resting place is notably marked by a pyramid of stones, generally decorated with little trinkets and gifts from Indian children.
