Lawton Things to Do

  • Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Just outside of Lawton is a magnificent 60,000 acre tract devoted to the preservation of wildlife. It includes a great many species of animal and plant life but the most popular and visible ones are the buffalo, Texas longhorn cattle and prarie dogs. Under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt the park was set aside in 1901. An early goal was to...

  • Veterans Memorial

This nice veterans memorial was placed on the grounds of the county courthouse in 1923 to honor Comanche County Veterans who served in World War 1. It has since been expanded to honor ALL of the nation's veterans. I feel it is important to remember the sacrifices made by our veterans and their contributions to our freedom and our way of life.

The Old Lawton High School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Make note of...

  • Lawton and Comanche County

Lawton is a city of about 98,000 (up 6% since 2000) located at the intersection of Interstate 44 and US Highway 62 in Comanche County in South Central Oklahoma. The area was long occupied by various Indian tribes like the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache, along with pre-historic habitation (like the Clovis People some 13,000 years ago). The town was...

  • Sight Seeing

The Lawton View area is a misunderstood neighborhood where there is a lot of talent but just directed in another path. For example I met someone there who is very talented and he has a website, if your into R&B or rap you will like what he has to offer. His ambition is what made me notice how much talent is truly hidden in this small town. What...

The Wichita Mountains sometimes called the Ancestral Rockies because they are thought to have been that vast, with the younger Rockies at the tail of the ancient Wichita Range. These are the oldest mountains in the great plains. They mainly consist of granite, rhyolite, and some other igneous rocks and are considered to be about 300 million years...

  • Geronimo's Last Stand

The Apache chief Geronimo lies near the most conspicuous marker in the Apache cemetery. His wife, offspring and near-relatives lie nearby. All that is required to access the military base is the presentation of a picture I.D. (your driver's license is sufficient) and a few miles of driving before reaching the Apache graveyard. Geronimo's resting...

Lawton Restaurants

  • Great Seafood; But Small Portions

Red Lobster. $17 as of July 2014. I am a BIG seafood fan so whenever I see a Red Lobster it puts a smile on my face. This one had a typically nice, family-friendly atmosphere and the food was very good. I just wished the portions were bigger. My waitress was very good too. Hours are 11 AM to 10 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 11 PM on...

  • Straight from Pusan

Pusan is a great place to get authentic Korean dishes. Anything from kimchi to bulgogi, it's all available. The bar is great at lunch time; it's all you can eat. Or, if you prefer, the menu provides several wonderful dishes. My personal favorite will always be dweji bulgogi, pork bulgogi. The blend of red pepper, red pepper paste, and shredded...

  • You choke it-they'll smoke it

Crockett's is one of the best BBQ restaurants I've ever been in. The food is amazing. It's fall-off-the-bone good, with tender brisket, delicious chicken, and all the other extras that make a backyard BBQ great. Upon entry, the aroma attacks you; it's clear that you are in a real smokehouse. The flavor is in the air. There is no way to turn around...

Lawton Local Customs

  • An Absolute MUST!

There is a historic drive-inn eatery called WAYNE'S that sits on a Cache road, just south of Cache & Gore (main thoroughfares). It is absolutely the best! For many years it has served as the local high school's hangout serving up mixed drinks (non-alcoholic) that are to die for. My fav is a VANILLA PEPSI. Trust me, their drinks are much better than...

  • Avian ingenuity

The barn swallows are among the most ingenious birds - they can build nests that seem to defy gravity. The ones here have nested en masse above the entrance to the Visitor's Center at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Seeing them here oblivious to the human traffic was a bonus for me. The visitor center is well worth a visit for some of the...

Lawton Off The Beaten Path

  • by southj Written Mar 5, 2007

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Meers, Oklahoma is a tiny little spot (the restaurant/store is also the post office). It is all that remains of the mining era boom roughly 100 years ago, when prospectors sought gold and silver in the Wichita Mountains. The restaurant has been in business continuously for over 100 years. But don't expect a quiet lunch or dinner, especially on weekends. There is always a line out the door for this place on Saturdays and Sundays. They raise their own Texas longhorn cattle and that is what they serve. GREAT barbecue and huge Meersburgers. You won't go away hungry.

While you're in the area, take a hike at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (or just drive through). It's a beautiful place nearly unspoiled by humans. Great hiking, backpacking, and nature watching.
