Sight Seeing, Lawton

LawtonFaith Says:  The Lawton View area is a misunderstood neighborhood where there is a lot of talent but just directed in another path. For example I met someone there who is very talented and he has a website, if your into R&B or rap you will like what he has to offer. His ambition is what...

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Lawton

rexvaughan Says:  Just outside of Lawton is a magnificent 60,000 acre tract devoted to the preservation of wildlife. It includes a great many species of animal and plant life but the most popular and visible ones are the buffalo, Texas longhorn cattle and prarie dogs. Under the leadership of...

Geronimo's Last Stand

Geronimo's Last Stand, Lawton

mrclay2000 Says:  The Apache chief Geronimo lies near the most conspicuous marker in the Apache cemetery. His wife, offspring and near-relatives lie nearby. All that is required to access the military base is the presentation of a picture I.D. (your driver's license is sufficient) and a few...

Pusan: Straight from Pusan

Pusan: Straight from Pusan, Lawton

jinkoe Says:  Pusan is a great place to get authentic Korean dishes. Anything from kimchi to bulgogi, it's all available. The bar is great at lunch time; it's all you can eat. Or, if you prefer, the menu provides several wonderful dishes. My personal favorite will always be dweji...

Crockett's Smokehouse: You choke it-they'll smoke it, Lawton

jinkoe Says:  Crockett's is one of the best BBQ restaurants I've ever been in. The food is amazing. It's fall-off-the-bone good, with tender brisket, delicious chicken, and all the other extras that make a backyard BBQ great. Upon entry, the aroma attacks you; it's clear that you are in a...

An Absolute MUST!

An Absolute MUST!, Lawton

LoveGypsy Says:  There is a historic drive-inn eatery called WAYNE'S that sits on a Cache road, just south of Cache & Gore (main thoroughfares). It is absolutely the best! For many years it has served as the local high school's hangout serving up mixed drinks (non-alcoholic) that are to die...

Avian ingenuity

Avian ingenuity, Lawton

rexvaughan Says:  The barn swallows are among the most ingenious birds - they can build nests that seem to defy gravity. The ones here have nested en masse above the entrance to the Visitor's Center at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Seeing them here oblivious to the human traffic was a...

Eat GREAT FOOD in a Mining Ghost Town!

Meers, Oklahoma is a tiny little spot (the restaurant/store is also the post office). It is all that remains of the mining era boom roughly 100 years ago, when prospectors sought gold and silver in the Wichita Mountains. The restaurant has been in business continuously for over 100 years. But don't expect a quiet lunch or dinner, especially on weekends. There is always a line out the door for this place on Saturdays and Sundays. They raise their own Texas longhorn cattle and that is what they serve. GREAT barbecue and huge Meersburgers. You won't go away hungry.

While you're in the area, take a hike at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (or just drive through). It's a beautiful place nearly unspoiled by humans. Great hiking, backpacking, and nature watching.
