Beverly's Pancake Corner: Ever had a Pancake Sandwich?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is the last of Beverly's Restaurants in OKC. The first restaurant was opened in 1921 and when I was in college there in the 50's there were at least 4 others and their specialty was "Chicken in the Rough" (see the golfing rooster on top of the sign). They always focused on fried chicken, huge delicious hamburgers (Bevburgers) and pancakes.

I usually visit OKC 2 or 3 times a year (I was born and raised in Oklahoma and went to Oklahoma City University), and on most trips I join my favorite cousin for breakfast at this place. I love their pancake sandwiches: two pancakes surrounding eggs scrambled with sausage (you can opt for bacon). I am sure part of my enjoyment is nostalgia, but the pancake sandwiches are wonderful.

Steakhouses: Won in a Poker Game
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This place opened in 1910 in the middle of the stockyards where cattle were brought for sale and shipment. The area in the 1920's was home to meat processors as well and came to be known as Packing Town. Cattlemen's was one of the few places that stayed open after sundown and thereby attracted a somewhat colorful clientele who, during Prohibition, could indulge in the home brewed "liquid delights." In 1945 the business was lost in a dice game. The bet was that Mr. Wade could not roll a "hard six" or 2 3's. He did and on the wall of one of the rooms is branded "33" as a memento of his incredible luck.

It is a mandatory stop for visiting celebreties and such people as John Wayne, George HW Bush, Ronald Reagan and Rebe McIntyre have dined here.

There are other things on the menu, but why would you order anything but steak here? It is outstanding. We took my son and daugther-in-law there recently and she declared it the best steak she had ever eaten.

Nonna's Bakery & Cafe: If they bake it, it is delicious!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This place reminds you of a French sidewalk cafe. It is as lovely as it is delicious. They have a farm and greenhouse where they grow most of their salad veggies and flowers that decorate the tables. Their bakery items alone make your knees weak. They have grown from a small cafe to one with several dining rooms and are planning another location in Bricktown (downtown OKC) soon.

The breads are fresh and delicious; their salads crisp and tasty; their entrees well prepared and yummy; thier desserts are out of this world. Lunching with 3 ladies, I just finished the desserts of 2 of them - a marvelous creme brule and an awesome apple dumpling.

    This place gets top marks.

    Sleepy Hollow: Authentic American Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This restaurant has been here for over 50 years and the menu has not changed a great deal. It is pretty much fried chicken and steak and is served family style. It is in an out of the way location in a small valley (hollow) in northeast OKC and is a pleasant, quiet and cosy atmosphere. Some of the orders are large and can be split for an additional fee.

The fried chicken is authentic and wonderful. With it comes family style bowls of wonderful mashed potatoes, creamy delicious gravy and green peas (English peas to those of us raised in the South) along with a basket of light yummy biscuits. Of course there is also honey for the biscuits. All the side dishes will be replenished when empty if desired. Included with the meal is pineapple sherbet (sorbet) which is a nice light finish to the meal. Open for lunch Mon-Fri and dinner 7 days a week.

Cafe do Brasil: Great muffins and more
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This little place is unimposing but a very good stop for breakfast or lunch. We had lunch here and found the food and service excellent. Their sandwiches and salads are fresh and flavorful and they bake a wide variety of cakes and muffins for dessert. I want to go back and try their very interesting looking breakfast menu and some other lunch items like Brasilian Pie and Brasilian Muffaleta. They are only open for breakfast and lunch (7:00-15:00) Mon-Sat.

Chain Restaurants: Best potato soup around
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • There are at least 4 locations for Charleston's in OKC: Nichols Hills, the Village, Northwest Expressway and Meridian Avenue near the airport. They serve a pretty extensive menu and I have not been disappointed in any instance. Their specialties are steak and baby back ribs which are delicious. The interiors are lots of wood and brick which gives a dark but pleasant and warm atmosphere.

One of my favorites here, besides the ribs, is their salad and baked potato soup for lunch. The soup is almost unmatched anywhere this side of Ireland.

Chain Restaurants: Time for an Ice Cream Break?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Braum's is probably the best ice cream you can find in this part of the country. They have numerous locations in Oklahoma and surrounding states, but so far have refused to expand further. They say that they will not put a store more than a day's drive from the source. At any rate, they have dozens of flavors of ice cream, yogurt and light ice cream. One of my favorites is cherry amaretto. An ideal spot for a ice cream snack!

They have other foods including an acceptable hamburger and a pretty good breakfast menu. Their french fries are mediocre.

Lido Restaurant: Vietnamese, Chinese & French?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This place advertises itself as Vietnamese, Chinese and French, but the menu is basically Chinese/Vietnamese with some French additions. It is located in an Oriental/Asian section of town and has excellent and inexpensive cuisine.

The egg drop soup and almond chicken are very good.

    Java Dave's: Coffee and more
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This a very nice coffee house with excellent coffee. We did not eat there, but they have a pretty extensive breakfast and lunch menu and a very tempting pastry display. An added benefit is that they have free wireless internet access (30 minutes). The decor features coffee apparatuses of all sorts - it is a very pleasant place for a coffee break.

    Bourbon Street Cafe': Great food!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Althought, we had to wait some time before we got a table. The service and the food was excellent. It was very comfortable and the decore was pleasurable. I really enjoyed my dinning experience, but I think the company makes it better too.

I think I had the Confetti Chicken Salad
crispy fried chicken served on a fresh garden salad with diced tomatoes, onion rings, bacon bits, homestyle croutons and the dressing of your choice.
    $8.95, which was really good!
