Pawnee Things to Do

  • Veterans Memorial

Like most county seats in Oklahoma and the United States, the courthouse grounds offer a Veterans Memorial to remember those lives lost in the cause of their country. Pawnee may have sent soldiers to faraway lands as early as the Spanish-American War, but by far the list of the fallen is longest for WWII.

  • The Pawnee Chief

Not listed on the National Register, the local newspaper has issued from a native stone building on the public square since the inception of Pawnee, but the present building was only built in 1941, the same year the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Many local newspapers have since folded or been bought by larger publishers in nearby larger towns, but...

  • Pawnee County Courthouse

Like the courthouses in Perry, Stillwater, and Bartlesville (you see where I'm headed already, don't you?), the Pawnee County Courthouse is likewise listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Such a listing is common for government buildings in the county seats, but to make matters worse, the courthouse in Pawnee is not by itself worthy of...

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Cowboy boots and western wear are the norm in this small town, and most of the elected officials will sound to an outsider as being straight from the range. Country & western music (its original sound) will alternate with its pop evolution in beer joints and dance halls around town. It seems quite appropriate (or perhaps inappropriate) for many of Pawnee's turn-of-the-century saloons to be converted today into modern pits of hedonism.

Pawnee Off The Beaten Path

  • Pawnee Bill Ranch

The great wild west showman "Pawnee" Bill (a.k.a. Gordon Lillie) was a contemporary and business rival of Buffalo Bill Cody, until they merged their shows and became international superstars. Today, Pawnee Bill's ranch stands atop a smart hillock in what is arguably the best location for a private residence in Oklahoma. For as far as the eye can...

  • Pawnee Bill Mansion and Outbuildings

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the ranchhouse is constructed of timber and stone on western motifs. The blacksmith's shop, the barracks, the museum, the barn wherein lie the actual show carriages and other conveyances, his hunting trophies, and his koi pond are very interesting talebearers of frontier and home life for this...

  • Hickory Dickory Dock

Touring Oklahoma towns is not unlike touring a Gothic cathedral -- the visitor can wander through and check off certain features. As stated ad infinitum elsewhere, towns in Oklahoma generally have a national bank, an old depot, a wonderful church and a Victorian-style clock either on or near their main square or courthouse lawn. With Pawnee the...

  • Red Brick Above the Roads

As you can imagine after looking at most of my other Oklahoma pages, Pawnee is generally a Victorian-era town composed mainly of red brick buildings. Although not as extensive as those in Guthrie nor as tightly-ranked as those in Perry, the general architectural scheme for Pawnee is the same as for everywhere else -- red brick facades, two stories...

  • Pawnee Historical Society

The historical society off the main square is a good place to start to enjoy your tour of town. While genealogy and other official records will obviously be kept at the nearby courthouse, the historical society will have all the artefacts and publications that add color and local flavor to the official documents. Anything pertaining to Pawnee...
