Lunch at the Wild Fork by BixB The Wild Fork combines casual elegance, fine art originals, and a dollop of decorating humor with talented, imaginative chefs to create a pleasant dining space and an excellent dining experience. Particularly unique is that the WIld Fork manages to please not only for lunch and dinner, but offers up extraordinary fare for breakfast as well (which also gives you a great opportunity to visit without the larger price tag of dining later). Why not start the day with fluffy Cinnamon Pecan Pancakes or "Wild Fork Hash." Rather visit at Lunch? Maybe the Red Cornmeal Crusted Chicken or Black Bean Cassoulet will catch your eye. Prefer to enjoy a fine dinner as part of your night on the town? You could start with the Grilled Shrimp & Sweet Corn Fritters seved with sides of goat cheese, chipotle aioli and pico de gallo, and follow it with a main course of Lemon-Garlic Lamb Chops with red chili-sun dried tomato syrup. Prime grilled steaks and chops, fresh fish and seafood, pasta dishes and gorgeous salads offer variety for all tastes. The restaurant's generous cellar of boutique wines will provide the perfect accompaniment and a decadent dessert will finish your memorable meal off in grand style. Te Kei's interior by BixB Fresh, flavorful, and innovative food presented in as stylish a setting as you will find in any U.S. city pretty well sums up Te Keis (pronounced "T.K.'s," as in the intials of owner Todd Kramer). The sophisticated architecture and decor alone are absolute winners. I love the colors, the textures, the lighting, the asian art and artifacts - everything about the look of Te Kei's. Of special note is the side dining room that features a gorgeous carved teakwood exterior wall from the front entrance of a palace in Semerang, Central Java. Luckily, the quality of the food lives up to the setting. Numerous rice bowls (try the Crispy Honey Shrimp), noodle bowls (like Pad Thai and Szechuan Blackened Chili Noodles) and sushi selections share the menu with beautiful entrees like Wok-Seared Salmon, Asian Breast of Duck, and Beef Tataki. A large selection of asian teas, coffees, beers and saki is also offered, along with a lengthy wine list and a full bar. Perhaps best of all, the prices are extremely reasonable, particularly when considering the knock-out surroundings. With an interior actually built in Ireland, Kilkenny's presents a wonderful old-world atmosphere in which to enjoy traditional Irish foods and new twists on old dishes. The menu is quite extensive for lunch or dinner. Some favorites include the Kilkenny Bake (a mix of lobster, shrimp and crabmeat in a creamy white wine sauce, topped with mashed potatoes and grated Parmesan cheese, then baked golden brown) and seven different Boxty. A few dishes on the menu are more expensive than usual for Tulsa, but there's plenty to please budget conscious diners as well. As you would expect, there is also a good variety of beers and ales and Irish whiskeys. Kilkennys regularly features live Irish music, offers a nice bruch on Saturday and Sunday starting at 10:00am, and since it is open until 2:00am every day, also makes a great late night stop. Elvis Eats Here! by BixB January 2007 Update: Sadly, tragically, the Metro Diner - like the era it celebrated - is a thing of the past. It is a victim of the expansion and renovation of the south side of the University of Tulsa campus. If you missed it, you have our condolences. It was truly one of a kind and will be sorely missed. Metro Diner - R.I.P. For nostalgia's sake, here is my original VT review: Hey Daddy-O, slick your jelly roll, grab your Peggy Sue, lay a patch in your Deuce, and make the scene at the Metro! If you understood all of that, you should feel right at home in this long-time favorite on old Route 66. From the chrome and formica tables, to the background music by Percy Faith or The Platters, the Metro Diner is a shrine to authentic 1950's dining. The menu offers classic American fare with choices like cheeseburgers with onion rings, meat-loaf or fried-chicken dinners, Dagwood sandwiches, and hand-dipped shakes. In true Diner fashion, the Metro offers a different "Blue Plate Special" every day of the week. Breakfast is also served all day. Prices are about $5-6 for burgers and $8-9 for dinners, but everything is good quality and well prepared, and the portions are generally generous. The Metro Diner sits in the shadow of the University of Tulsa football stadium and most of the wait staff are friendly students who appreciate a generous tip. Its location makes it a popular choice before and after events on the campus, but be advised that it is not a large place and seating goes fast. The Metro will make reservations for larger parties.
For a classic regional meal, try the chicken fried steak covered in cream gravy, with sides of mashed potatoes and fried okra, and washed down with a tall glass of sweet iced tea. Now that's good eatin'! mmmmm, pie! by BixB Pizza the way it should be - made from scratch by people who care! Savastano's Pizzeria is a family-owned piece of Chicago transplanted to Tulsa's far south suburbs. Everything is fresh and delicious, with flavorful home-made sauces, hand-made Itailian sausage (available by the pound for enjoying at home), and pizza crust that satisfies like manna from heaven. Savastano's is an excellent choice for dining before a concert or game at the adjacent SpiritBank Event Center, but when ordering the original Chicago-style pizzas, be prepared for a wait of up to 45 minutes. The perfection of these deep-dish monsters can't be hurried! Also be forewarned that each slice is practically a meal in itself. A large-size pizza might actually feed all the residents of a small Sicilian village. The menu also includes appetizers, pasta dishes, sandwiches and chicago-style hotdogs. The large welcoming retaurant, with its brick walls and high ceiling, is staffed by the friendly Savastano family and fresh-faced servers, and decorated with dozens of pictures of Chicago landmarks. This sets a cheerful atmosphere and serves to remind you of the origins for such culinary goodness. A cozy full bar is located downstairs below the restaurant.

Entrance to Chimi's by BixB For casual full-service Mexican dining, Chimi's is a reliable choice. Locally owned, Chimi's has been operating in Tulsa since 1983. It currently has three locations in the city. The menu contains the expected fare of enchiladas, chimichangas, burritos, etc. but it is all well-prepared and everything can be ordered a la carte or as part of combination dinners. The tamales are particualrly good, and I enjoy the Friday evening special of shrimp enchiladas. The freshly made salsa is also noteworthy, with two degrees of spiciness served as a compliment to your meal with endless baskets of homemade tortilla chips. There is a lunch menu that offers several favorites with slightly smaller portions and reduced prices. Chimi's also has a full bar. Of the three locations, the one on 15th Street, in the Cherry Street shopping district (see my "Shopping" page), is recommended over the others. It is situated in Lincoln Plaza, a center at 15th & S. Peoria Ave. formed from buildings that once comprised the c.1909 Lincoln Elementary School. In fair weather the patio perched up on the north side of the building is a great place to enjoy your meal and a margarita, with a very nice view of the Tulsa skyline to the northwest. The large windows in the main dining area also provide the same good view. Leave a Comment Theme: MexicanPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 1304 E. 15th; 8144 S. Rib Crib's award winning ribs by BixB Finer dining is well and good, and exotic fare from around the world should certainly be sampled and appreciated, but sometime its nice to just get messy with some good American beef smoked over a hickory fire and slathered with a succulent barbecue sauce! When the mood hits in Tulsa, a great place to go is Rib Crib. Due to the success of the Tulsa-based franchise, it's where people in seven other states now go too. A vegan's nightmare, Rib Crib serves up slab after slab of perfectly smoked beef spare ribs, baby back ribs, and brisket, along with chicken, ham, pulled pork, and sausages. Meats can be ordered as part of larger dinners or as a sandwich on a bun. A variety of traditional side dishes are offered, including ranch-style beans and fried okra, and the growing menu also offers salads, baked potatoes and other non-BBQ items for diners less interested in loading up on the protein. For rib lovers and those with big appetites, the Crib has an all-you-can-eat rib special on Tuesdays from 5:00pm to close. There are several Rib Crib locations in the Tulsa area, but the original one at 16th & S. Harvard, near the University of Tulsa, is still a favorite. Opened in 1992 in a building that formerly housed a Polynesian lounge, the original always pleases with its casual surroundings, a pleasant wait staff of mostly college kids, and the food that made it famous. When I moved to Tulsa, mediocre Tex-Mex food was what passed for Mexican restaurant fare here, but in the past 15 years, there has been a huge influx of Mexicans and other Latin Americans to Tulsa. One thing the influx of Hispanics has brought with it is great food. The best new places aren't the trendy, upscale restaurants, but the smaller, out-of-the-way eateries. My favorite is El Rio Verde, in the 100 block of North Trenton Ave., just north of I-244 and Utica Blvd. Mares, tacos, burritos... they're all good. On weekends you can get Menudo and Posole, too.
The Mexican tacos (as opposed to the Gringo tacos; you can order either) are my favorites. And the giant wet burritos. You can pick whatever kind of meat -- from cheek meat, goat meat, grilled pork, chorizo, beef, chicken, and more). The salsa is delicious with a hint of cloves and a medium dose of chile. Muy sabroso! Throughout the United States there are cities where coneys -- hot dogs covered with chili and maybe cheese and onions -- are a popular dish. And there are cities where coneys aren't popular. Tulsa is definitely a Coney Town! We have dozens of restaurants and local chains specializing in coneys. I love 'em. I've eaten coneys at Coney Island, in three boroughs of NYC, in Cincinnati and in other cities, but I believe Tulsa's are the best. And my favorites here are the coneys at the Coney I-Lander restaurants, of which there are about half a dozen in Tulsa. The chili is to die for, and a tray loaded with three "loaded" coneys (chili, cheese, mustard and onions, doused with a liberal sprinkling of cayenne pepper) is like a little piece of heaven.
The chili-covered tamales are good. So is just a straight bowl of chili. But the coneys are what it's all about. Yumm! I believe I'll go get some now. Simple decor and a friendly staff, along with good prices and fantastic fresh seafood make this a "must try" restaurant for anyone new to Tulsa, or residents who have not yet tried it.
Gumbo by the quart, to go. As good as what it served to you at your table, and half the price when you order it from the fish counter "to go".
