    The Deschutes River Trails

A series of three parallel trails through pine forests and lava flows along the variously placid and tumultuous Deschutes River. Separate trails were built for hikers, horses, and bicycles. Cyclists also share the hiking trails in some parts. The trails are a total of about 30 miles along the Deschutes National Forest. Some nice spots along the trails are Benham Falls and Dillon Falls. Other activites like rafting and trout fishing prove enjoyable here as well. The trails are easy to moderate through different locations and only standard gear apllies.

The best way to learn of all the spots in and around the deschutes National Forest is to pick up a park map ($6-$8) which shows all the trails and roads. This park has a lot of numbered back roads that require a 4 wheel drive vehicle and seem to be great for 4 wheelers and ATV's (all terrain vehicles). In the summer the visitor's center is open and will direct you to where you would like.

Pilote Butte is this huge mound of rock and dirt that just sticks up in the middle of the city. It's a nice small hike, roundtrip of 45 minutes. At the top you can see for miles around and get a even neater look at the mountains. You can drive up or walk or even bike ride.

Water. A sweatshirt or jacket in case the wind picks up. A camera for shots of the awesome views up there.

  • Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort - Bend
    Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort
    by Etoile2B
Mt. Bachelor resort is a great place for beginners and advanced skiiers and snowboarders alike to test their skills. The ski school offers a variety of lessons for every skill level. The mountain boasts a vast terrain and three lodges. The snow is usually stellar and the runs, groomed. And when the winds allow, the Summit Chair offers great advanced runs and bowls at the peak. Sunrise lodge is the oldest on the mountain and is often less crowded than the more popular Pine Martin Lodge. Long, wide runs and exceptional powder are some of the benefits to this resort. The main drawback: no ski in / ski out. The nearest overnight lodging is 20 minutes away under the best of conditions. This keeps the crowds down, but after a long day on the slopes it can be difficult to sit in traffic on the drive back home. With a variety of great lift ticket options, Mt. Bachelor is a personal favorite.

Rentals are available on the mountain.
