When Crater Lake was formed, ash from the exploded volcanic mountain settled into this dust bowl. Now the Christmas Valley Dunes are mostly a remote recreational center for off-road dune buggies. Unfortunately, my big rig couldn't take the wash board gravel road to get there, so please consider the link which is good images...

I had to drive from Medford, OR east to Boise, ID. The original route called for driving OR Hwy 65 to north of Crater Lake National Park until it reached OR 97. Then, I was to travel north to Bend, OR to travel east on Hwy 20. However, I decided that a short cut through Fort Rock and Christmas Valley was possible. These back desert rodes are well paved and empty of traffic, which is good, but also empty of services. The scenic route through Fort Rock and Christmas Valley did save me some time, and I had the benefit of seeing a region of Oregon not usually visited. See my tips of Fort Rock, OR.
