Lakeview Things to Do

Take a drive to the Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge. The desert scenery and being completely alone for hours will make you feel like you are on a different planet. And yet the many kinds of wildlife - including wild horses, antelope and jackrabbbits - and the many types of terrain - rocky cliffs, dry creeks, pine forrests, and sulfer lakes are guaranteed to make you fall in love with Oregon.

If you plan to travel and stay in Lakeview, Make sure you bring a portable grill and a good cook. There isn't anywere in this town that is worth eating at. Anywere that seves fast food is over priced and food is cheap. Marios on the north side has good food, but you'll be lucky to find them open (only 3 days a week) and you'll need to bring about $25-$35 a person. Jerries has what can be expected from their chain restraunt, for fair prices, and the Mexican restraunt has good food for fair prices if you like mexican food. There is a new chinesse place that I havent tried yet but i wouldnt recomend any but those 4.

Favorite Dish: the sanwiches at jerries are their best and i had the chicken half but wont again because it was over cooked or something.

As far as the burgers - they were OK, but we went for the fast part of it - the drive through, how about 20 minutes? in the sun? in July. just another experience.

Things move pretty slow in Lakeview. Expect courteous honest service from local businesses, but expect to wait extra time for that service. Also most businesses close early, so plan ahead.

The tap water didn't look very clear, I haven't seen an official report, but just to be safe... Safeway and other local markets carry plenty of bottled water.

Just north of the beautiful Hart Lake, in the Warner Valley there is a dozen of other so called "lakes" - I don't know what they look like during other times of the year, but in July they look like any other part of the desert. The ground is dried up clay, sage growing everywhere with other desert plants, rabbits run wild just about everywhere.

Fondest memory: I miss going to the library as a 7 year old child & Attending the Marius & Alger theatres each Saturday paying only 25 cents to see double features of cowboy movies, comedies, news/sport shorts, travelogues, Disney films & even local on-stage plays. I also miss the swimming pool.
