Do see Lake Billy Chinook. It is beautiful but crowded in the summer. Pelton Dam is another spot to recreate. Of course, fishing and hunting. You really must like the outdoors to fully appreciate Madras and Jefferson County.

Pepe's hands down. I love Mexican food and Pepe and his wife can really cook. The tortas (sandwiches) are to die for. Ummm, yumyum. Pepe is a wonderful host. AND, they sell Mexican bakery goods too. You must go there--now.
Favorite Dish: Everything. Seriously. The only thing I would be careful of is how hot do you want it? My husband would ask for what he called 'The Whiteboy Special'--translation--NOTHING HOT.

Charlie's pizza on the south side of town and Golden City (chinese) at the north 'Y' is worth it! Martina's mexican (bus stop) has great menudo on Sunday's but if you are white, they treat you bad.
Charlie's....... all good(high prices) Golden City.....they don't speak english too well, be patient Martina's...... Gringos go home, but stay long enough to spend your money!

Madras and Jefferson County in general is the most racially and ethnic diverse area in Oregon. The racial mix is Native American, Hispanic and white. The interaction within these diverse groups is pretty good, not perfect.

Speed trap central! The law loves to stop anyone from out of town. The courts only want your money because they will just keep fining you. Half the population doesn't have a license or insurance because of the TRAP
Unique Suggestions: Drive an old crappy car so it doesn't get "siezed"
Fun Alternatives: If you are just passing thru, I suggest permanently immobilizing the cop and get the hell out , cause it's either you or him.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Central Oregon weather is nothing if not unpredictable. The evening temp can freeze up to June so be prepared and check the weather forcast and still bring a light wrap or jacket to be safe.
Toiletries and Medical Supplies: There is a hospital in town and plenty of pharmacies so if you forget something it can be replaced easily.

Favorite thing: 2 of the 3 pages on VT about Madras, say it's not a particularly good place. I would tend to agree, so make it 3 of 4. The motel where I stayed was not that good and the atmosphere was a little creepy. Even the Jefferson County Court House was not very impressive. The best person I met was the 10 year-old girl, that was the hostess at the restaurant.

Favorite thing: One of the best local activites is to sneak up behind the sheriff and tape a 'wide load' sign to his backside
Fondest memory: My best memory of Madras is when the north side of town caught fire (on the grade near Safeway)
