Bold Four-Footed Scavengers of the Campground

by glabah Updated Mar 4, 2011

Raccoons are exceptionally bold and daring, and trying to keep them out of your food may be an interesting challenge. You should not leave any of your food unattended, even for a short time, especially when cooking your evening meal in the dark.

Turning your back for just a brief time may result in an unexpected surprise when you turn around.

You will need to keep your food locked up in your vehicle, or otherwise secure, when you are not available to look after it.

Elk and deer have been seen in the park as well, and they can be somewhat annoying when accustomed to people. However, for the most part they fear people, and will not be in the park except at night, and then only away from people for the most part.

Squirrels are to be found here as well, though not a huge number, and they can be chased off easily enough.

The raccoons are by far the most obnoxious and difficult to deal with scavengers in the park, and are bold enough to really require some effort to convince them to go away.

    Tsunamis and logs

by TashieKitten Updated Jul 14, 2005
    Nehalem Bay

Though you may not see a whole lot of driftwood in this picture, there are places along the coast where wood collects due to the currents and tides. Do not stand on logs in the ocean. People have been killed by logs: when a wave comes along and overturns a log someone is standing on, that person becomes trapped underneath the log and drowns. It has happened before.

Tsunami's have also hit the Oregon Coast. The worst was in 1964, after the 9. whatever earthquake in Alaska.

Please see my Oregon State page for information regarding tsunami warnings and the dangers of playing on driftwood in the ocean. These are real threats on the Oregon coast.
